Using Wideman as an example, would actually make a good case of having two separate awards (offensive D and defensive D).
They have it for forwards, why not defensemen. People have talked about it for a while now, they should just do it.

Even if he scores 30 you can't say he dominates a game the way other offence first legit candidates like Subban and Karlson do. So no Norris

It's great to see Wideman playing well offensively but he is also getting a lot of puck luck. He has the best shooting % (18.2) for any defenseman with more than one goal. Trading him in the off-season could be trading him at his all-time best value.

He's been exactly the kind of player this team needed and wanted when he was signed. A RH threat from the point who contributes offensively and often.
As mentioned his play is to the credit of him, Hartley and the skilled players giving him great opportunities.
I wonder how many primary assists Gaudreau has had on Wideman's goals.

Cripes the guy has a cap hit of $5.25mil/yr until 2017! He's definitely over-achieving this year as compared to the first 2 years he's been on the Flames. I can still remember him gettin' totally undressed by Crosby. He can thank Gaudreau for most of those beautiful passes to him.

Yeah. If the question was should he be in Norris conversation, the answer is an extremely easy and resounding no. But the question was would he be in the conversation and I think that's a bit more debatable. I think with 30 goals, doing something only 8 defenseman had done before him gets him some votes. Remember these voters are terrible, they didn't even know what wing Ovechkin played. They'll go onto NHL.com and search the top point and goal scoring defensemen and pick the first name they recognize, some might see Wideman leading with 30 goals over the next best with 20 or so and decide that's enough for a second place vote (voting Lidstrom first) because they don't know who Giordano or Brodie are anyways.

You can get all the beauty passes to the point you want. You still have to make the shot.
And a Dman getting undressed by Crosby? That never happens.

He did score that goal almost below the goal line...pretty unheard of for goals from Dmen

I'd like to see what he could land us at the trading deadline if he is on a 25 goal pace.

Although I love how he has been contributing on the offensive side, and winning us games. I would really like him to be better in his own end. It’s nail biting to watch our defence if it’s not Brodie or Gio. Obvious we need to be better in our own end, as the only other plus defensemen is Russell at +3. If this team want to go anywhere this stat has to change.

Great second pairing defenseman for us this year. Still overpaid. Nowhere close to Norris worthy.

The thread should just be about his great play and appreciation of it. Throwing in the Norris question will take this the completely wrong direction.
I like Dennis Wideman

No way, he has my vote for the Rocket Richard trophy! Flames are going to have a field day with trophies this year!
RR - Wideman
Calder - Gaudreau
Jack Adams - Hartley
Norris - Giordano

Such a tough call with Wideman.
This team would not be as successful without Wideman on that second pair with Russell, but on the flip side, he is still prone to brutal giveaways and poor defensive decisions (he scored twice last nite but was still even).
It'd be nice if the Flames could upgrade him with a more well rounded defencemen and not lose the offense, but I don't see how they could do that.
A part of me wants them to trade him while he's hot and lucky (high shooting %), but they need his replacement if they do.
The top 4 defence on this team is integral to the team's offensive success.

Wideman and Russell are a great pairing for the Flames with that said I'm glad Gio and Brodie are the #1 pairing.
Wideman and Russell give Hartley many options and open up the attack for Gio and Brodie and vice versa. Tremendous depth on the attack with those 4 on the backend.
Wideman this season is earning that paycheck.
Since he came back from missing a few games at the start of the season he has done everything he can to contribute.
He is a huge threat on the PP on either the first or second unit.
Wideman makes up for his footspeed in other ways.
Hartley is using Wideman perfectly.

Look at the +/- of each pairing:
Giordano(+17)/Brodie(+20)
Russell(+3)/Wideman(+0)
Smid(-8)/Engelland(-8)
With the way Wideman is producing I would have hoped he would be a plus player. Pray to jebus for no injuries to the top pairing or the lack of depth will be revealed.

Pretty close to that "sell high" moment.

If only there was a trophy for the best #3 d-man on a team.
Bouwmeester (or Shattenkirk) would be Wideman's completion, Haljmarson? Hamhuis? Brodin? Emelin? Bogosian.
Wideman and Russell are pretty solid as #3/4 when you look around at other teams.

I like this Dennis Wideman character.
As soon as we went down a goal last night, I turned and said 'Come on Wideman!' . The guy has been seriously clutch this season.
