There is a stigma to drinking on Christmas, even here in Iceland, but our family stopped giving a sh*t about that quite some time ago, so its party time.

In Denmark you're pretty much doing it wrong if you're not ####faced by the end of Christmas dinner.

Christmas drinking is a dilemma for me. I would love to be drunk through the whole thing ... but I also want to go home pretty much as soon as it's appropriate.
So I don't drink and I just deal with people.

If you drink enough at a rapid enough pace, you might be asked to leave sooner than appropriate. It's a win-win.

Interesting tidbit but a friend of mine from jersey is always amazed how Canadians normally say 'merry Christmas' still? He claims that the US has been more progressive and have moved more towards happy holidays. Canadians are apologetically lackadaisical in this regard. I still use lbs for weight

Is it really progressive to take the religion out of a religious holiday?

It's actually kind of reactionary if you think about the history of the holiday.

It's not, what it is is annoying.
I'm not even religious and I find it ridiculous. News Flash ... other religions exist, they have major holidays, this country happens to be a majority in one of those and as a result this Holiday is celebrated. If that offends you, then stay in the house. If someone comes and says Merry Christmas to you and you're not Christian, deal with it, it's meant as a positive greeting, not intended to offend. Conversely, if someone comes up to you and says Happy Holidays and you're a Christian ... also deal with it.
However, the real "War on Christmas" is the ridiculous level of commercialism that Christmas brings. People shouldn't be pounding themselves into debt, stressing over that debt and also stressing over obligations on Christmas. It's so dumb.

I think this is a big one for me as well. Christmas shouldn't be something you have to put away a paycheque for or pay interest on.

Soon there will be the "Its not Xmas, its CHRISTmas" which is ironic because Xmas is a term meaning Christmas drummed up by American Christians..
Let the good times begin!

I keep waiting for this sentiment to show up on Facebook, so that Ican pounce on it.
Using "X" as a symbol for "Christ" has been used by Christians for centuries.

If it wasn't for that whole wife and kids thing, I would happily wipe Christmas off my calendar.

I love Christmas too!
Other than weddings, is there another joyous occasion where family can come together under one roof and share some laughs and a nice meal?
I'm not sure why there's so much resentment over Christmas. I know there's stress and the travel, but from all of the hard work you put into it, you're benefiting the people around you. Think of your kids who get to open their presents (which you picked up) on Christmas morning. Think of your parents who no doubt constantly think of their children (you) and what a feeling it must be to see you show up at their door.
Stress is self generated so it's entirely up to you whether you want to stay stressed, or just relax and soak in the holiday cheer

The worst part of Christmas is the commercials that start playing as early as September. The ramp up right after Halloween.
And what happened to our warm and dry Christmases? We used to get those about 10 years ago. Now, there's snow and cold weather all over the place at Christmas. #### the climate, global warming can't happen soon enough.

All of this only works if your family doesn't generally suck. Actually, my sister and my mom are alright, besides my mom being a bit of a spaz about drinking. It's everyone else that are just awful.

We do all our presents at Sinterklaas, and we're pretty minimalistic about it, so we don't worry about the Christmas stress. No lights, no tree, no presents, just good food with good company. And usually work is pretty light for that week, so stress is at an all-time low.
It would be different if we had to share Christmas with the inlaws, but my wife likes them even less than I do, so we don't even bother.

I think my Christmas would be less stressful if I eliminated all the travel, which is what I am doing. I think my holidays are going to be filled with holiday cheer this year, holiday cheer and a House of Cards marathon.
