Yeah, and in the 3 years before that he got a whopping 12 goals combined, and played like a listless overpaid zombie. Are other GM's supposed to forget that because of a hot 33 games? I don't this value was as high as you think it was. While certainly not a steal, I hardly consider it a tragedy. I'll ask though, what would have made it acceptable to you?
I think in a few years, Poirier alone will make us forget all about Jay Bouwmeester. Hell, I forgot about the guy while he was still here.

I find it almost hard to believe that Bouwmeester ever played for the Flames. He had so little of an impact over his four seasons that he has almost entirely been erased from the Flames cache part of my brain.

What made Berra special was his leg speed. Clint Malarchuk, Hartley and Cloutier all thought his leg-speed and athleticism was incredible (not just 'good' - incredible), especially for his size. Berra is a bit of a freak of nature. He was also such a competitive guy and apparently such a 'good guy', it was hard not to cheer for him.
He is 28 and not 20, so he has time is not really on his side. However, that 3 year deal will hopefully allow him the time to fix his style of play. If they manage to correct Berra's fundamentals (over-aggressive at times and lose the net, positioning is often poor and often has to make a crazy save to compensate) he will be a fantastic goalie. Feel bad for the guy, and I still wish him well and try to follow his development a bit - but hope he has his worst games every time the Flames play him

Just because cp thought jbo should be bought out the year before means nothing. The year he was traded he was playing great and was looking better than Gio at the time.

Losing Bouw was great in the end because it allowed top line minutes for Brodie and Gio.
The guy had such top notch skills in certain areas (skating, really, plus maybe conditioning that allowed him to play so many minutes) ... but did not have the strength, smarts, fire and compete. He was a smooth skating wallflower.
Remember, he came from a loser team in Florida, where, like Luongo, and Olli, the idea was that they were star players buried on an unfortunate team and were highly slight after. After years of underachieving in a quasi competitive team with mediocre coaching, Hartley put him in a position to reclaim trade value.
Not a game changer, that is for sure. The JBouw trade benefitted the Flames.

The Tanguay trade was addition by subtraction. If you think we have a log jam at LW now, imagine if Tanguay was still here. Getting a serviceable, brittle and overpaid RW for a self described mopey LW is at least a wash.
Sarich for O'Brien might not have been a great trade, but IMO sometimes a trade involves such marginal pieces, that it doesn't matter if you win it or lose it. Sure Sarich was playing top 4 minutes with the Avs, but the Avs didn't have a very good defense. Saying we lost the trade because Sarich was top 4 in Colorado is like saying we should have traded Butler for a 1st rounder because he's been playing on the top pairing for the Flames.
And the JBo trade has to be measured against the possible outcomes... he could have played out his contact here and signed elsewhere as a free agent. We got something for him, maybe we could have got more in return, but IMO not a whole lot more. And we got more for him than I would have thought was possible 6-12 months earlier.
Both those trades are OK, not really wins, not really losses.
Now the Berra trade, that one was a big win.

Yeah.. not much good there. They seemed to be wanting to move Parenteau all of last year... not sure why they wanted Briere who's done as an effective player.
Interesting all of those trades involved them getting much older players.

The only good trade he's made so far is the Tanguay and Sarich one. WHY FEASTER, WHY?

That trade at best is mediocre for Roy. Sarich and SOB were pretty much washes last year, and he gets an old soft Tanguay for the rest of that contract. For what he provides when healthy and the needs of the current Flames I would much prefer a big body, straight line RW over whatever Tanguay represents at this stage of his career.

I thought the problem with Bouw was coaching? From what I understand, he does exactly what the coach tells him. Under Sutter he was supposed to play back. Hartley got better production out of him by allowing him to play to his strengths. He must have some talent, he was selected to be on one of the greatest hockey teams ever selected after all.

That really doesn't look good. Seems to me like his equivalent of 'scouting' is watching Highlight of the Night. He's brought in big name players (Briere, Tanguay, Sarich, Stuart, Iginla) who would have been incredible 10 years ago, and he's brought in a guy in Berra who would have made the HONour roll a couple of times last season for outrageous saves, but let in soft goals like a leaky sieve.

He absolutely has some talent. I'm sure part of his problem here was coaching, how he was used, and just simply there was not a good enough playing partner for him to maximise his abilities or one that was a good fit for him.
But a huge part of the problem was him. Flames wanted him to be a leader and a difference maker, an elite D-man the way the likes of Keith, Weber and now Gio are. What we got was a nice compliment piece, someone who can ride shotgun very effectively to an elite D-man and compliment there game (problem being we didn't have said player for him). This is the role he currently plays in St.Louis and played for Team Canada.
We certainly didn't have the cap space or the luxury for him to turn out not to be the leading man we thought we were getting, St. Louis and Team Canada did.

FWIW - Bouwmeester has been bad this year. Not sure how long his injury has been in play, but he has 2 points and his underlying stats aren't very good either (i.e. in Chris Butler range - against tougher competition obviously).

With that being said the Flames wanted the older Tangs and Sarich out so it is what it is.

I wouldnt say that trade was a win for them, it was addition by subtraction for us. We offloaded a pouty and expensive Tanguay and Sarich who was oft-injured and not getting much playing time under Hartley.
We had to get rid of these guys one way or another.
SOB was fairly easy to let go and Jones certainly has his uses when hes healthy and on his game.

Plus I think Bouwmeester was better suited to this team than the one he left. Calgary is now a speed and North South team with transition, his speed would have fit that.
The Calgary teams he played on were older, slower, and more east / west. He was always a fish out of water in cowtown
