University of Calgary approves gender-neutral washrooms
Source: http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...utral-washroom
Quote:
In recent years, a number of Canadian post-secondary institutions, including the universities of Alberta, Regina and Victoria, have introduced multi-stall, gender-inclusive restrooms and online maps for transgender students in a bid to shield them from harassment for choosing between a male or female washroom.
On Friday, the U of C joined that list when school officials approved a proposal by the Students’ Union to transform an existing men’s washroom in the MacEwan Student Centre for its queer, transgender and non-binary gender expressing students and faculty.

Good on them, another step in the right (or rather left) direction.

UBC's new law school has had these since it first opened in 2011. Glad U of C is following suit.

I had heard about this last fall and had figured they already had one on campus. Surprised to find out the final approval came down yesterday.

This is a simple and common sense decision...kind of an unneccesary political statement.

Wasn't making a political statement actually, was just trying to be witty.

Are these unisex facilities that anyone can use or are these washrooms supposed to be specifically for the LGBTQ community?

You have to swipe your gay card to unlock the doors

We have these at work. Actually, they're just two single-stall bathrooms that lack a mens/womens only sign on them. Pretty efficient actually.

What a insightful comment and well thought out argument.
One for the entire campus? Good start, but not exactly the most practical. I'd like to see one in every building, say the washrooms on the second floor of every building are gender-neutral. There will always be one close by and those who need them will always know where they are.

I hate the idea of not having gender specific washrooms, mainly because I feel 100x the guilt / shame when passing a woman as I am leaving a washroom as I do a man.
I don't even want to know what their reaction is; I am fairly sure it is a disservice to all men though

Really all washrooms should be gender neutral.
The only valid argument against is that men don't need as much space as urinals are spaced closer and handle a lot of the demand.
Outside of that it's all vanity reasons.

I think the big thing is privacy.
I went to U of C for 5 years, and spent a lot of time after class studying.
Needed privacy to drop a deuce and was able to find secret spots on campus where bathrooms never got used and were super clean.
Will draw a map to them if anyone is interested. PM me.

We have gender-neutral washrooms at work. Guys love it. Girls don't.

Seems like a good step. To the comments made about needing more of these on the campus, serious question, what kind of demand would there be for this type of washroom? I understand you want the people who benefit from this to have access when required, but there also likely needs to be a certain amount of demand required to justify making these changes everywhere.
Maybe I'm out of touch, but I'd assume there aren't that many students or staff (proportionately) that really require these facility changes.

I don't understand, is it for transgendered people only or can anyone use it and then transgendered people can use it with everyone else?

That is what I asked earlier and the only reply was a smart Ass comment about needing a gay card. I was curious if this was different from a unisex facility.

I read a recent article that shed some light on something I hadn't thought of before. One of the issues for some LGBTQ men is that they are not able to use urinals.
