In regards to Iginla's family isn't he getting divorced? In that case I assume he may want to stay closer to Alberta to see his kids.

Agreed, $83 million in gross income from NHL teams.
I would remind everyone that this is only his contract money and does not include any of his endorsements. Conservatively you can add another $10 million from endorsements over the entire course of his career so far. I'll bet no one on CP can actually list all of the endorsements that Iggy has done since he became a professional at 18 years old. Advertising and endorsements are not one in the same, so every time Iggy has agreed to lend his name to something he typically has collected a fee or a percentage or both.
Yes and not forgetting Meehan's take, taxes, etc... it's not all free and clear, but no way does Iggy or his extended family need more money. Haven't even conservatively ballparked his investment income at all...

I have more issue with him locking in for 3 years as a 37 year old, than I do with the team he went to (although I hate Colorado/ Patty Roy).

He didn't sign with the panthers following their fluke season with the top line of versteeg, Weiss and Fleischman. He signed with Colorado. They still have Duchene, landeskog, EJ, Varlamov, and some schlub named MacKinnon.
They took a step back this year. They're going to get better.

I don't know if that was anymore than a rumor, but regardless, it doesn't sound like he wants to be closer to Alberta and his kids because of a divorce. It sounds like his kids and family are with him in Denver and that was a big driving force for his decision.

It makes me sad to think of Iginla out there in a strange place far from home, getting older surrounded by strangers. We can easily eat his cap hit ( and might even need it to make the floor). Would it be so wrong to bring him home? The team culture is so strong now he'd have to find a way to fit into it, not the other way around.

I agree. If not this season...next season. Would love for him to return home and help make the push for a cup before he retires. Would be one of the greatest NHL moments of all time for gio to hand the cup to iginla at the dome.

though there is one major stumbling block to leaving 14 million dollars on the table in order to win a cup...

Iggy did a lot of good for our organization and was a great player but aside from the playoff run, I gotta say the Iginla years as a Flames fan was pretty bad. Defensive systems, scoring deficiencies, big slow sluggish players, no cohesiveness, and the locker room was a clique: Iginla's crew vs the rest. I totally agree with you, move forward

Truly dislike the idea of people telling athletes they should take way less than they deserve to go play for a winner.
Sure he's made a boatload of money over his career. He's also used to living a certain lifestyle and in a few years his earnings potential becomes tiny compared to it is now. I doubt he's out buying a new Ferrari every two weeks when he gets a paycheck. He can set-up his family for generations. Why not make the most of it since its highly likely he's going to be the only person in his family tree to ever have the chance to earn money like this.
Athletes are the only people who get this treatment.

No one said it was simple.
You know there are odds for a reason? Some teams are good, some teams are bad. Colorado's odds of winning the cup are 40 to 1.
Bruins odds? 9 to 1.
I know what team I'd choose if I was 37 and wanting to win a cup.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I thought Colorado was a great choice. Maybe not for this year, but Mackinnon will only improve.
Anyone not named Chicago or Los Angeles is on the outside, until they prove otherwise. Boston's ship has sailed, he played with Crosby, LA/Chi don't need him. Not sure where else was a more sure bet that would pay and want him.
Taking 1m per is stupid, I also don't like it - honestly wish the league would stop it.

I agree, Colorado will be a dominant team in a couple of years. They do however need to get their #### together on the defensive side of the ice.
