One of the best trades in Flames history. Getting a second round pick for a guy who obviously couldn't see the puck if it was 2-4 feet in the air was a robbery job.

And Hunter Smith looking good with 22pts in 21gp this season with Oshawa (was at about a .70 PPG clip last season).

What was the reason the Avs were high on Berra again? Why did they sign him to a big 3 year 1-way out of the gate?

I have not followed him in Colorado, but I feel bad for Berra. Such a likeable guy and it sucks to see him struggle like that. I hope he can turn it around soon.

From a Flames standpoint, it was obviously a great trade. Fantastic value even then, and with Berra struggling it looks even better.

Berra isn't struggling, he's playing the way he always plays. He just sucks.

I'm happy for him in that he squeezed 4.5M out of them. Good for him.

Was an awful trade for Colorado the moment it was made. I could maybe see if he was super young and had a bunch of room for development, but Berra will be 28 in just over a month. What you see it more or less what you get and he had done nothing on North American ice to garner that kind of return or that contract. Complete and utter highway robbery by the Flames.

And I wouldn't feel too sorry for him. On most teams he would've gotten a 2-way deal and would probably be making $75K this year in the AHL. Instead he got $4.35M in guaranteed money out of the Avalanche and if he's smart won't have any serious money worries for the rest of his life.

that doesn't mean I can't wish him well. And no, the fact that he's earning a lot of money doesn't change that. Frankly the "he earns a lot of money so don't feel bad for him" line means nothing to me. This is a guy who came over from Europe and has his NHL career in shambles after what, 14 months? He's been dealing with high expectations in both cities he's played in ("best goalie outside of the NHL" when he came to Calgary, and then the Avs gave up a 2nd for him) and he hasn't lived up to it. That must be tough.

Again, I hope he turns it around. I think we got great value from him and I don't need him to struggle to feel even better about the trade.

Yep, a 1 year prove it contact should have been the contact offer, I mean who else is going to offer him more with how he showed last year?

Wasn't Ramo the one who was penned the "best goalie not in the NHL" by feaster?

I guess Burke got a little revenge for the SOB and Jones trade where the Flames owners ended up shelling out a lot of dough for not a lot of production.

Francois Allaire (goalie coach for Avs) had worked with Berra a ton back in Switzerland. Hiller as well. He was familiar with him and his success in Biel and recommended him to Roy and Sakic as a replacement for Gigure.

I think between Allaire and Roy they figured he would be a great goalie with a little more work with both of them and so they locked him up for 3 years.

I hope he bounces back and does well. I liked him. Spoke with him once at training camp and he seemed like a very laid back, calm goalie and that nothing got to him. He had the right personality for the position, good size. He just really struggled translating his European game to the NHL. He admits it himself.

Sarich played 54 games for Colorado last year, 10 points.
SOB played 45 for the Flames, 3 points.

Sarich was the better player but didn't want to play for Hartley. Both made $2m last year, SOB got $2m buyout both aren't playing in the league this year. SOB in the AHL.

Tanguay, hurt again as he was last year and, has 23 points in 37 games over 2 years, makes $3.5m. Without Iginla (after the first time he left, he was useless in Montreal, and even less useful in Tampa, and only getting back with Iginla for Rd 2 in Calgary did he get back to form) he would've been useless here.

Jones, 58 games, 22 points. Makes $4m.

So, when you look at stats, I don't know if anyone can claim a clear winner or loser of that trade. Jones has played more games then anyone else in the trade and almost has as many points as Tanguay does.

Sarich was playing top 4 for the av's last year before he got hurt. He clearly was better than sob, let alone the extra $2 million sob got paid.

I have no doubt that tanguay, even if he didn't want to be part of rebuild, would have been top 3 in points for flames if healthy. Tanguay still plays at a top 6 level. Jones is more of a 3rd line player.

So yes clear winner was not Feaster on that trade. I rank it as the 2nd worst trade after jbo return.

Bouwmeester got us Poirier and eventually Hunter Smith via Berra. I'd gladly make that trade today again. Feaster would gladly take that as his worst trade.

Sometimes people forget that the summer before he was traded, many were calling for him to be bought out.

Berra was crap. We also don't know if Feaster would have made or gotten the same deal from the av's.

Just because cp thought jbo should be bought out the year before means nothing. The year he was traded he was playing great and was looking better than Gio at the time.

The only people I can think of that thinks it was a fair trade are posters on cp that figure flames don't make bad trades.

A good synopsis. When Jones is on he can be good. Unfortunately that is few and far between.

Not to mention that Jones actually makes more money than Tanguay.

Not that we need to worry about the cap, but we shouldn't be doing Colorado any favours in that regard either.

A guy who spends that much time on LTIR isn’t really much of a cap issue no matter what team he’s on.

Anyway, the Avs still wound up losing Stastny for nothing. Evidently they needed a bigger favour.
