You can’t just offer someone unconditional waivers. That can only be done, under the CBA, if you have grounds to terminate their contract. Apart from buyouts (which can only be done in the off season), the Standard Player Contract only allows termination under specific conditions:
Quote:
14. The Club may also terminate this SPC upon written notice to the Player (but only after obtaining Waivers from all other Clubs) if the Player shall at any time:
(a) fail, refuse, or neglect to obey the Club's rules governing training and conduct of Players, if such failure, refusal or neglect should constitute a material breach of this SPC.
(b) fail, refuse or neglect to render his services hereunder or in any other manner materially breach this SPC.
|
Basically, since Setoguchi hasn’t broken any rules in an obvious or egregious way, he would have to refuse to report to Adirondack. If he refused to report, he would lose his entire salary for the rest of the year unless someone chose to pick him up on unconditional waivers. Whatever else the man is, he’s not half a million dollars’ worth of stupid.
So no $125 waivers for Devin.

I've said this once and I'll say it again since I work with a coworker who is related to Seto. Seto is as stubborn as his father (who if you didn't know what a damn good hockey player who wasn't drafted because of his attitude), he needs to change his attitude and needs to start listening to the coaches if he ever wants to play in the NHL again.
He apparently just does whatever he wants on and off the ice.

Setoguchi left the center ice team Celebration after the NJ win in 0-60 seconds. Seemed odd at the time. Maybe it was nothing or maybe that is an example of his ####ty attitude.
Either way the majority of fans were disappointed Seto was signed even for 750k.
Hopefully there is no reason for the Flames to call him back up.
He had the worst plus minus on the team and that wasn't due to misfortune.
On a winning team to be -7 in only 12 games is even worse.

I believe you when you talk about his attitude problems in the past, but during his stint here he did seem committed to what Hartley wanted him to do and by all accounts had a good attitude.
He just wasn't that good and looked like he lacked confidence.

No. The majority of fans thought the signing was a no risk proposition and were quite OK with it.
If the Flames call him back up it will be because he's found his game in the AHL. And that would be a good thing.
The kid had effort. He couldn't score. He was a minus player. All of that is true. +/- was not a big issue for me - it's not a good stat. He wasn't a minus most games - he got many of them in the worst games the Flames played (St. Louis, Carolina, Fla). He had a pretty good stretch of play in the middle of the eastern road trip. At the end of the day he was outperformed by Ferland and that's the reason he's down. It would have happened sooner absent injuries.
I hope he can turn things around for himself.

Looks like Setoguchi has 4 points (1 goal, 3 helpers) in 6 games with Adirondack. Anyone know how he's been playing other than the stats. Any hope he figures things out?

Scoring is all bout confidence. Something Setoguchi and Sven shared a lack of I think. Would love to se them both break out in Addy and get back up for a few games to test them out.

I'm not concerned with how Setoguchi plays the rest of the season since he's not in the long term plans.

I am. Not because I care much whether Setoguchi plays another game for the Flames or not, but because it's kinda sad to see any player max out or 'flame out' rather early, unless they're an absolute prick of a person in real life.

He's been doing pretty well with Adirondack. He's missed a few practices, not sure if due to injury or maintenance days, but when he's playing in game he's set up a few good chances and been good on the backcheck taking pucks away from opposing players. More smart plays and scoring chances stand out in my memory then stupid plays and mistakes. His game against the Stars was probably the only disaster since he's been sent down, although he was still playing a good defensive game unfortunately due to the fact he was the one giving up the chances.
Last night with was with Wolf and Tousignant and playing a more physical and checking line role. That seems to be where Huska likes him. He had played with Reinhart, but it seems to be Tousignant-Seto and another winger for the last couple games. Previous games he's been 1st or 2nd line, although things are shuffling alot now with guys being sent down. It's a bit hard to say numbers of lines because we are rolling 4 good scoring lines right now. We don't seem to have a filler line anymore, it's all very skilled. He's 2nd unit on the PP. I believe he's also a PK guy as well.
I was really skeptical of him being in Addy and didn't want him, but he's been a good addition to the team and not the player he was in Calgary. I think the demotion and Huska may have driven a point home with him that this is his chance to prove himself and to do so because he's been playing a good game and working hard. He's not just there and floating so he can collect the paycheque.

Awesome, thanks for the detailed update. I do think it matters how he does. Both because of his role to have an effect (positive or negative) on the kids and also for any value to flip him at the trade deadline (currently zero).
