Interesting to see what B-Trel does with Glencross and Ramo. Both could net a decent return, but both could also be useful to the flames as well for the playoff push...

Does that ever actually happen, a team taking on a bad contract in order to get another asset alongside it (high draft pick). I always hear talk about it, yet I've never actually seen it happen. Sutter trading Primeau a while ago is the only one I can think of, yet that was for a 4th liner. Just once I'd like to see a big name player with a bad contract move along with a high draft pick, like the media always claims is going to happen.

plus he earns 7m a year until 2018 ... so if the Flames decides to take that horrible contract off the Canes hands, it better comes with a lottery pick or it simply makes no sense. And given the direction the Canes have been going, that is never going to happen.

Feaster talked a lot about it, but it obviously never happened. The thing is that with the invention of the salary cap, the draft became so much more important than before. Teams treat 1st rounders like treasures these days and GMs will consider every other option before shipping one out. Buying 1st rounders by taking on bad contracts is a nice theory, but it never happens. Draft picks are too important building blocks in the NHL right now.

I've said it before and will say it again Ramo has #1 potential in this league, even from the start of last year he's improved a LOT.
He will be here for a while and should be given a good run, he's at least better then Hiller.
A dman to target should be Zach Bogosian, price will be hefty so I'm not sure what to offer.
Granlund + Wideman + Klimchuk?

I'd say that the Regehr trade to Buffalo was an example. We included a 2nd rounder so that they'd take the Kotalik contract. It is just a guess though.

I don't think what Dreger said today is any news that Treliving hasn't talked about all along since he got here and continues to say, or that 29 other GMs in the league aren't saying or trying to do.
I will believe there will be more substance to this when McKenzie, Friedman or Lebrun weigh-in.

Thank you Mr. Dreger for repeating what our GM said in an interview(SN960) a week ago. All this while trying to sound like a true insider, I guess this is how news are really made.
From the interview(Thanks again sureLoss):

I am hopeful the flames will be able to trade a mid level prospect like Reinhart or Knight for a big contract 23-27 year old where a team is looking to get out of the salary

So what if we took a player that was in Jones or Widemans situation last year when they didn't look good. So lets says 5.5 million contract. We trade for that and a 1st for a second rounder.
Then turn around and trade that player at 50% for a 2nd rounder.
Essentially we'd buy a 1st round pick for 2.75 million

Jeebus, Dreger. We've got 4 rookies plus Sven, plus Monahan, plus Knight in the lineup. Plus guys like Backlund, Colborne, Byron, Bouma and Brodie who are still kids at 25 and under. How young do we have to be to not be in a complete rebuild?

A short term, high cap hit player fits the bill for the salary dump to gain a pick trade.
Burying players making more than around 900K doesn't provide full cap reductions and you still have to pay the salary. Teams who might make this trade are budget teams replacing from within or teams against the cap needing cap space to improve.
The Flames could simply grab a player in a deal on an off day, demote a young guy, throw the acquired player on waivers, then call that young guy straight back up.
Take a guy like Fleischmann on Florida - last year of his deal, makes 4.5M cap hit, 1G, 1A in 18 games. If Florida wants to clear the $$ away, and they bury him, they still have a cap hit of around 3.6M on their team for nothing. And they have to pay the salary. We take that on, get an incentive, such as a pick.
Example Trade = Setoguchi for Fleischmann + 2nd round pick.

I guess if you only pick 3rd overall that's not a rebuild??
