Another slow start for Iginla
Has father time caught up with Iginla?
Quote:
When asked why he thinks he's gotten off to one of the slowest starts of his career, Iginla indicated it is more mental with him right now than physical.
"Sometimes, I get watching the play and thinking too much, and then I stop moving," said Iginla, 23rd on the all-time NHL list with 562 goals. "I need to get moving and doing a little less thinking. You always want to be thinking, but I need to do more moving, be physical, be intense, be good along the wall and in front of the net."
|
Quote:
Iginla knows his scoring output — on pace for about 10 goals for the season — isn't where it should be for a player getting top-six minutes. But he does not think age has suddenly caught up with him.
"My legs feel fine. I don't feel any different than last year, the year before," Iginla said after practice Monday at the Class of 1923 Arena on the University of Pennsylvania campus. "Physically, I feel great. I have no excuses. We need to string wins together. It's a team, but the first thing you do is look at yourself, and I need to find more ways to produce."

One thing that's undeniable is that he made a bad decision going to the Aves. Not a great fit for him. He should've stayed in Boston. Whatever. He's chasing the money, which is his right, I guess.

He's old now. He can't keep up to the speed of the game playing the style he's used too. He hasn't learned to adapt and that + his age is why he is regressing in my opinion

I don't think he's chasing the money.
Boston literally couldn't afford to sign him unless he played for league minimum basically. Also I think if you're in Iggy's shoes and want to pick a team that has a legit shot at competing for the Cup in your remaining seasons, Colorado looked like a strong contender for a dominant team given their insane depth of talent.

Everyone says this about him every year and he still finds a way to get going and put up 30 goals. I'm sure he'll go on a crazy hot streak pretty soon. I'm rooting for him as always. Go Iggy go!

Oh that's complete bull#### AC. As much as I respect you, I cannot agree with that line of crap. I think most of us who follow hockey to any degree realized that the Aves were a mirage. Iggy made a mistake based on money. Not the first guy to do that.

Seems like a rude overreaction there.
If he was only chasing money, then why didn't he sign with the Islanders, who offered a 4 year deal? Its almost as if there are other factors for a player making a huge life-changing decision for himself and his family.

He may not have gone for the money but he went for a long term deal so he didn't have to uproot his family every off season. That I can understand.

Maybe if Iginla was into advanced stats he would have realized the mess he was getting himself into...

Pretty much this. The guy is 37 now. Very few players keep posting huge numbers right up until their 40s. I think Iginla is pretty close to the end of his road in the league. Had to happen eventually.
Time doesn't slow down for anyone.

Yeah, it was a bit of an over-reaction and a little bit rude. Apologies. I could have stated my opinion in a more logical, less emotional manner. I think that Iggy went with the place where he got the best deal with the longest term and the most money over that term that he was offered (and wasn't a crap team). Meaning, as far as I'm concerned he was still chasing the money instead of purely going for the place that gave him the best chance of winning. It's his prerogative, but sheesh, at his age and after making as much money as he has in his career, it's literally the last thing I'd worry about.

Such a simplified line of thinking. They are playing much worse this year on the 'advanced' stats.
They are down about 2% difference in Fenwick which is the current difference St.Louis and Edmonton.
You can say last year was a mirage, but they are worse this year. Its not just a continuation of last season. They made changes to their roster, like everyone else.

Money always plays a part regardless of the player. Can't fault him for taking the money as it's business. IMO his friendship with Sakic likely played a big role in him signing with the Avs. That said from the Avs point of view it was a terrible contract as they are paying a lot of money for a guy that will likely score 20-25 goals and not offer anything in the way of 2-way play and things will probably really look bad in the last year of the deal. It's possible they brought him in to mentor the younger players which I am lukewarm after seeing the positive shift in the culture in the Flames locker room after he was moved.

Let's be honest. Iginla has always been about the money throughout his career. I Don't recall him accepting anything leas than $7.5 million while he was here. He even held out once.

There was an article/interview after Iginla signed with the Avs. Among the reasons stated in this thread (the two most important being competitive team and not uprooting his family) the other is that his kids are starting to play hockey and wanted to be in a place where youth hockey was well established. So, no, I don't think it was just chasing money, but rather several factors that included a 3-year deal which gave him stability and security for his family.

He only made $7.5M once in his career. And that was the 2nd year of his 2 year $13M deal. Then he signed 3 years/$21M and 5 years/$35M contracts.
So he's made less than $7.5M year in every year of his career except for one.

That's weird considering he never made more than $7MAAV per season.

Most of that has to do with his last contract with the Flames being done prior to the shift to $8+ million for franchise players. If he was in his prime today he would be expecting $8-9 million for sure. Personally I don't have any issue with any player expecting market value but there are some who think he took hometown discounts with the Flames which is not really the case.
