Only trouble is, a lot of other teams are looking for the same thing. So far this season, nobody is trading an NHL D unless they get one back.

when he breaks into the league in 2017 or 2018. No way an 18-year-old kid is going to walk into the NHL as a #3 guy.

Well, it's rare, but there are a couple of examples. Phaneuf was one year older, but there was no NHL season the first year he could have made it. I think he at least played as a number 3. Which is where he belonged and still does.

I suggested getting Boychuk at the time but no one wants to pay the price while we're in a rebuild.

Only if it makes sense in the long-term.
Gormley? Yes.
Marc Staal via free agency? Yes.
The age, and the player has to be right. Should we be giving up assets for a 29 year old #3 d-man in this trade market? Hell no.

Yes. of course very much dependent upon cost.
Would a Nik Hjalmarsen (sp) be considered a number 3? Might be available but would also probably leave Chicago in the same situation we currently are.

Someone else mentioned Staal (I believe it was in the trade rumours thread). I like that idea. Also too early to tell who will hit FA after this season but Boychuk, Franson and Martinez are three names I would be interested in. Although it's likely none of those 4 ever hit the market too.

We have an abundance of forward prospects. I wouldn't mind giving up one or two. Some want to trade Glencross. A defenceman in return might also work.

Perfect time to try and pull another rabbit out of the hat with a player that needs a change of scenery. Oleksiak or Gormley come to mind. We should be getting a bigger guy with good all-round skills, not purely a specialist in one area or another. David Savard or (if possible) Zach Bogosian also come to mind.
We have the assets to acquire a type of defenseman like this. To our advantage, we are relatively deep with young centers, and there's only so many roster spots.

Not a bad idea. We have a few forward prospects that we are going to be hard pressed to hold on to after this year and guys like Gormley or Savard may be available at the right price. Time to use those assets.
Not sure about Oleksiak though - a defenseman with his pedigree should get a lot of time to develop in Dallas. I doubt they give up on him too quickly. He is only 21 as well. If I were the Stars, I'd hold on to Oleksiak, Klingberg and Dillon for a while. Add Honka to that mix and it could be a pretty good D group in a few years.

I'm hoping Wotherspoon, Sieloff, Kulak or Ramage can turn into that guy. We should start drafting more D in the later rounds that are between 6'1 and 6'3. Dmen have more room to grow than forwards where their ceiling is usually apparent, we need to develop the d-core with our prospects as the trade route isn't going to work out.

For this year? No.
Stay the course, Captain. Next year a couple of players within the development system will be pushing for that spot. Anaheim/Chicago games showed what a team can look at building through drafts. In this season already you can see how much the drafting department has really turned around.

I would guess Zbynek Michalek because the Treliving contact on Coyotes. Free agent after this year, much better than Smid or Engelland and maybe even trade for him in dead line.
Give him 3 years and 4,5 millions in the summer. We have top one and two defenseman it is easier to get number three or four.
Interesting to see what we do if we are in playoff spot in trade dead line, try to make defense deeper or hope injury free. If we trade what we are willing to give, no near future first round pick not even second round. So after that you won´t get much on return.
