If Gaudreau had been a Duck and the refs allowed that goal, I'd have been livid. It was a kick and was pretty clearly a kick.

Agreed. I mean, if the same kind of play resulted in an allowed goal against us, I would be supremely pissed off.

Yep. Without that goal late in the second I think the Flames would've actually come back and won. They took all the momentum and were doing whatever they wanted in the Ducks' end out there.
2 goal leads are not safe against the Calgary Flames. 3...it appears is a different story.

I don't think we started slowly at all. We outshot the Ducks 12-9 or something, had the better chances, and were unlucky to be down 1-0 on an own goal off the defenseman's skate.
If anything spotted the Ducks a lead, it's the Honda Center curse.

I agree, don't want to see guys kicking at the puck.

Ramo should get the next 4 starts,
Gio and Brodie continue to amaze, drive the offense.
Maybe it doesn't matter who's up front,

That was a good no goal call by the refs. Even with softer rulings now that was still a pretty legit kicking motion by Gaudreau. I wish too that it would have counted but that would've been sketchy.

So yes, totally understandable from a safety issue...
Quote:
The no-kick rule on goals was originally created for safety reasons back in the days where goaltenders did not wear masks and were not nearly as padded or otherwise as well-protected as they are nowadays. Kicking at the puck in the vicinity of the goalie or a downed defenseman around the crease was a very dangerous proposition.
|
But some fairly blurry lines with these parts of the rules...
Quote:
People have asked me over the years about various permutations of the kicking rules. Unlike the somewhat ambiguous "distinct kicking motion" wording in the rulebook, the rules are quite clear in addressing how to handle various events that can happen after a puck is kicked by an attacking player.
* If the kicked puck deflects into the net off the equipment (shin pads, hockey pants, etc) of a player on either team -- attacking or defending, including the goalie -- it is no goal.
* If a kicked puck deflects into the net off the stick of any defending position player EXCEPT the goalie, it's a good goal.
* If a kicked puck deflects into the net off the goalie's stick, it's no goal.
* As stated earlier, if a kicked puck goes in after it grazes the stick of the player who kicked it, it's a good goal. Same thing if it goes off a teammate's stick. The teammate would be the one officially awarded with the goal.
* If the player who kicked the puck dropped his stick on the ice on the play and the kicked puck subsequently hits the stick and goes in the net, it's no goal.

I thought it was one of their better games all season from start to finish. The difference tonight was 'puck luck' and Anderson outplaying Hiller.
Also, I thought the goal by Gaudreau was a clear kick. I never understand why some people want players to be able to kick it in. With teams storming the net, players getting knocked down and the resulting chaos, the last thing this league should be allowing is guys kicking in there. I think that would be insanely dangerous at times.

Respectfully disagree. There were a couple good shifts, but they were trapped by the Getzlaf line a lot in the first. And the goal came about because they were first trapped and then were slow at a clearing attempt. Had Russell not deflected it in, there was a Duck waiting backdoor. So it was fluke, but after being schooled for quite a while by the top line.

On a side note, the Canucks did something right with a beautiful tribute to Pat Quinn tonight.

Seriously though. Johnny's shiftiness totally reminds me of Leo Messi. Similar style of play.

The good news: They won the third period handily. They could have won but for some bad puck luck. And one weak goal/bad board play.

I haven't said much about it until tonight but the way Hartley uses Sven is really irritating. When you're down by three and the guy had been looking dangerous you might wanna give the guy a chance. I have little doubt that if you give him one period with Monahan and Glencross they score one. Just try it Bob. Sheesh.
