I don't entirely disagree with the size statements, but I think it is being over-stated by quite a bit.
Personally, I think it has more to do with puck battles along the boards. Every time a team has managed to keep the play along the boards and not have an open-ice track meet, the Flames haven't looked as good.

Not a penalty on Brodie. You can push a guy with the puck. Should have been a penalty on the 2 on 1 against Calgary.

I've gone to a few games there in the last year, and you are correct. The place is tomblike at times (the marble in the hallways doesn't help). There are a few knowledgable fans, but that squad is wildly underappreciated by the locals.
