The problem is really that they are spending 42% of the salary cap on the least important position in hockey. Wingers.
I don't want to down play wingers, because to be a good team you need to be good everywhere. But if I was guessing the average team spends just under 30% of their payroll on Centers, just under 40% on D, ~8% on goalies, and 25% on wingers, even though there are more wingers than any other position.
It's a generalization, because there can be other factors like ELC's, Home-Town Discounts, unexpected player development (like Gio & Brodie).
But with the 42% on its own, a statistician who knows nothing about hockey other than the and players salaries could probably figure out that the Oilers lineup is seriously imbalanced and can't succeed until they move some "high-end" wingers out, and bring in better Centers, Goaltenders, Defencemen & support players..
That it's self is not Hall's fault, but when you watch him play you also can't help but feel he could be a better hockey player in every facet of the game. There is allot of blame to go around here.

I think at this point, we all know they will stay the course. Fun. Radio guys think that Ralph Kruger wouldn't have been fired if Lowe had full control but MacTavish was the one who fired him. So Lowe and MacTavish aren't on the same page???
Maybe they should save Lowe because he has won so many cups. Are they all brain washed?

Bunk, if he hated losing so much, maybe he would lead by example in terms of actually putting in some effort in his play in the neutral and defensive zone. Hall needs to take a long look in the mirror as the so called future captain of the Oilers. He's a huge part of the failure of that team.

I rarely listen to ched but right now its too insane not to....interesting that even the media is turning on the team...after the game no hardest working oiler was awarded nor something called the 4th star.
That's a change as usually most media toes that line all the time.

Can we just strip #19 from David Jones and give it to Judge Jooris?

Awesome game. I height we played well for the whole game but made mistakes that young teams do. New Jersey looked hungry tonight.
But holy hell. What a finish.
And Glencross is now in my good books. But seeing him play like that will only make me more angry when he doesn't.

Taylor Hall is a big part of the problem, but the list of problems is a long one...
He is an absolute turnover machine, I can't say it any other way...

First game since the Iginla 500 goal game. LOVE. THIS. TEAM. My buddy and I at the game with 30s to go "well, might as well chug the beer, game's over". Just as we both finish, puck is in. Unreal!

The Aura surrounding this current roster is amazing.
Not sure Ramo made more than 3 saves in the first 3 periods, but made 2 big ones in OT. Gio and Brodie were horrific tonight as well (since they became the NEW Keith/Seabrook of the NHL)
But here we are with a Win.
Jooris looks like the 2C we haven't had in 20 years.
And now Glencross is awake - look out league!

Here's a crazy idea - how about we try playing with the lead for a couple of games - I need to give my heart a rest!

In fairness, the whole team is such a trainwreck in its own zone, it would be hard to tell if one player did make an effort.
Most of the time, Hall looks lost and confused in his own zone. Maybe if he had a coach that put up some signposts for him, he could fix that. Instead, they have Dallas Eakins and the Swarm. (The world’s least successful bar band.)
You could put Bob Gainey in his prime on that team, and he would look terrible defensively, because one player cannot play defensive hockey by himself.
