The Vietnamese sub place across from Harry Hays is the best hands down. A close second is the one in Kensington.
The best Shawarma in town is Shawarma king.
Damn, that Palace of Eats sandwich looks good.

Cajun Charlie's in Eau Claire, they have a few sandwiches that I love.
For subs, it's Thai Tai on 17th Ave for me.

I saw the same ones, one of them was rather cute, the other 2, not so much.
The Vietnamese subs are the only places I will comment on, they are very good. Merle's is ok, althought I am not a big smoked meat kind of guy.

I've had Vietnamese Subs all across town and IMO the best ones are at the Elbow River Casino... no joke.

They are usually pub fare/greasy spoon diner fare, but the place I used to enjoy them, I can no longer frequent (and never liked frequenting there in the first place, but thats a different story).

A darn good question. I've not found a decent Monte Cristo in Calgary. There used to be a cafe on 11th that did an OK one but nothing great. I usually have to get my Monte Cristo while travelling. Truck stops always do them up right.

interesting. I've eaten there twice, and at least once the service was terrible...not sure if that is chicken or egg in terms of the no paycheque part

Studio 82 was my place of choice for them the last 2 or 3 years.
Then, last year, they only served Wings on Wings night (Saturdays) and not the regular menu. The only times I would go there, would be a Saturday occasionaly to meet some friends who liked going there, and to watch whatever hockey game was on Saturday night. Or, Flames PPV's when Schanks was over crowded.
The overall crap hole that place became (it did get worse in the last 3 years) and those friends situation has changed, means there's little reason to go there. then, the blatant selling out by putting "Go Oiler Go..Alberta's Team" up on the sgin hours after the Flames lost Game 7 (and a bunch of rock holes in said sign within days after that), clinched it for me.
I heard Bottoms Up on 17th has them...another place that would hardly be considered a dining destination.

I used to be a regular at Falafel King until I tried Tazza in Bridgeland. That's the best one in the city out of all the ones I've tried.

This thread is making me hungry.
I'll vote for Quiznos as best chain sub. A tad pricey though.

I'm a regular at Falafel King and I love it there. I probably won't try Tazza strictly due to geographic reasons.

Tazza is quite good. I still prefer Shawarma King because of their garlic sauce. Same thing with Falafel King.

I've never eaten there, but I am not surprised. They actually stole the photo I took of a Palace of Eats sandwich (posted earlier) to put in their advertising. So, if they are willing to steal a copyrighted picture of a competitor's sandwich, I am not surprised that do other unethical and stingy things.
Edit: heres a link to a picture of the ad: http://calgary.wikia.com/wiki/Merle%27s_Delicatessen

That Merle's place is run by a couple of 20ish guys that seemed pretty laid-back about actually giving a care about important things... Like making money...
I'm not surprised at all. I'll have to remember to never patronize that place again now that I know they don't pay their staff.

quoted for truth. Actually, I don't think I've found a Vietnamese Sub I haven't liked, although the ThiThi on 8th Ave left a little bit to be desired. Elbow River Casino is good. I'm not sure of the name, but I went to a place in the Dragon City Mall (?) today that was also quite delicious, without the 30 minute wait.
What are the best donair places in town?

Ug, I've had some terrible Vietnamese subs. There's a place on 17th Ave SE, Kim Ahn's on 17th Ave SE, Thi Thi's are all icky.
Cedar's deli makes a mean donair. I never have them anymore after I discovered Shawarmas
