Perhaps we're over using Backlund. Granlund may be better suited on the second line while Backlund eats third line minutes instead.

Monahan, Granlund, Bennett, Backlund, Jooris. Thank goodness we aren't in draft lottery contention, where would we even fit Mcdavid in.

You know something. I genuinely like David Jones, as a person and a player. It's really hard to watch someone's career slowly fall apart due to injuries. I think if you saw him healthy over an 82 game season you would see him earn every penny of that $4 million contract.

David Jones is the perfect player for the Flames. He helps the Flames to get to the cap floor but gets injured so often that it allows the Flames to play a younger inexpensive player.

Emphasizing what Fire said. He's the perfect player for a rebuilding team with this many NHL ready prospects.
Thank you David Jones. Its unfortunate that he's so injury prone, I just hope he has an injury free post-career. Probably shouldn't play sports with his kids past the age of 6 though. Won't be able to go on IR.

If you changed that 4 to a 1 I still doubt that would be true.
It's nice that he isn't god awful like he was last year but by far the best thing Jonrs brings to this team is his vastly overpaid deal that helps up reach the floor.

At David Jones' peak production, he scored 27 goals and 45 points in 77 games (he's never been able to play a full 82 game season). That's about 0.58 PPG and totally in line with what other players who make $4 million are getting. His career totals put him at 0.45 PPG. Here are the numbers for other players at the $4 million mark and around 30 years of age (Jones is 30 for reference).
Ales Hemsky: Age 31. Career average=0.72 PPG
P.A. Parenteau: Age 31. Career average=0.69 PPG
Jussi Jokinen: Age 31. Career average=0.63 PPG
Milan Michalek: Age 29. Career average=0.62 PPG (and he played with Thornton)
Drew Stafford: Age 29. Career average=0.58 PPG
Brandon Dubinsky: Age 28. Career average=0.57 PPG
Jiri Hudler: Age 30. Career average=0.57 PPG
Nikolay Kulemin: Age 28. Career average=0.46 PPG
David Jones: Age 30. Career average=0.45 PPG
Benoit Pouliot: Age 28. Career average=0.44 PPG
Brian Bickell: Age 28. Career average=0.37 PPG
David Jones doesn't even have the skill set of the top half of the list. His direct comparables are Kulemin and Pouliot, and I think he comes out just fine in that scenario.
Jones is a guy that definitely overproduced in a couple years, but watching him play and knowing what he does well, if he were ever to stay healthy he would easily be in the 15-20 goal range and probably about 40 points. For his salary, it's pretty fair value, especially when you're seeing Subban's $9 million and David Krejci's $7.25 million handed out. A year or two ago, Jones would be overpaid. Now? not so much.
So yeah, I'm bored of the rhetoric that Jones is an overpaid bum. He's really not.

Well I would say Pouliot and Kulemin are overpaid as well so if those are his comparables then yes he is still vastly overpaid.
Based on his play in Calgary I can't see him getting close to 20 goals or 40 pointseven if healthy for 82, 92 or 102 games.

I like him too, but I wish he played more. He plays hard, gets hurt, sucks for a while, gets it together again, plays hard gets hurt....rinse and repeat.
I like him, and for the first time in ages I dont care what he gets paid, I just want to see him on the ice more consistently.

Great to hear about Michael Ferland's presence on ice today. Sorry to hear about David Jones and the rest of the Flames on injured list.

BT on Fan 960 today said Jones was day to day - whatever his injury is it didn't seem too serious.
