Flames Notes from Nov 19 Practice

it was an optional skate

per Kristen Odland Russell, Jones, Brodie, Giordano Glencross and Wideman did not skate

Hartley said there was a chance Russell could return against Chicago

Hartley said Hiller would get the start Thursday vs Chicago and Ramo would get the start Saturday vs New Jersey

The goalie starts make sense - after all Hiller is probably in the Black Hawk's heads a bit after the last game.

So the guys that chose the option were the top 3 d-men, who all skated miles, Russell and Jones, who are hurt and Glencross - who has what excuse?

He's a veteran, I really don't think it's an issue.

Glencross has missed a practice last week for "maintenance" possibly the same case here

Oh, I know he's entitled to do so. But there are other vets who didn't. Smid, who played top 4 minutes, McGrattan, who I suspect plays every minute of practice hard.

If it was maintenance, fine. But if not, when the whole team aside from the top Dmen and injured take the skate after a SO win, and you are the only veteran sitting, perhaps it's the wrong message.

Wrong message to who exactly? CP posters? Perhaps it's not a big deal....

If GlenX didn't skate today I suspect it is because something is not 100% rather than he just didn't feel like it. He gets the bum's rush a little too quick sometimes.

Lots of speculation here over what is a regular occurrence and non-issue.

Didn't Aeneas say he overheard Glencross complaining about injuries when he was at practice earlier this week?

Why, yes he did:

Glencross, for some reason, decided to tell everyone rinkside about all his nagging injuries. He was answering someone's question. He was early off the ice, followed by Hudler.

We know you have an irrational hate on for the guy, but what part of "optional" do you not understand? Is it really necessary to slag this veteran at every opportunity? And don't feed me the usual he's lazy and disinterested. That is complete crap.

I dont know, I never like it when the veterans skip optional days without a good reason.

That said, I think Glencross has a bunch of little injuries.

CP: Glencross is a lazy bum who isn't engaged during games, falls down a lot, and skips practice for no reason.

Reality: Glencross is struggling through a barrage of injuries. Likely affecting his core and lower body, which makes is difficult to stay on his feet during puck battles. With so many vets out of the lineup, he is doing his best to keep up against the other team's top lines, so that the young guys don't get exposed. However, he isn't able to play his usual physical style and is concentrating on playing a smart defensive game until he's back to 100%. Spending the day in the trainer's room getting treatment so he can get to at least 80% by the time Thursday night rolls around.

/speculation

IMO, Glencross shouldnt be playing games if he is struggling through a barrage of injuries. I wont go as far and say he is hurting the team but he certainly isnt helping the team. He fits in perfectly with the flames of old but when he is surrounded by guys going 100%, it doesnt make him look great. Miss a couple games, get back to 100% and get back to the Glencross we have seen in the past.
Perhaps some notes on hustle during line changes can be taken from the press box while he recovers.
Most guys are battling some injuries right now - If I recall, hasnt Smid taken a beating in the last 2 weeks? Hudler is as much of a vet as they come and he found his way onto the ice. Bouma should skip every optional to recover the style of game he plays. Engelland seemed to hurt his hand during the fight...he was on the ice.

IMO, there is no excuse for Glencross to be playing games and missing optional skates when he is playing how he is. Either use the injuries as your excuse for being a step behind and recover fully from them or get out there with the rest of the team and improve your game.

I couldnt disagree more. Hes taking one for the team right now playing through minor injuries while guys who dont have that luxury are on the sidelines.

Hes helping at game time far more than hes hindering. Glencross can keep on keeping on as far as I'm concerned.

I didn't think we had optional skates this year. Didn't I read Hartley say that at the beginning of the year?

I think it might be that he's not holding optional skates as a standard. However, many coaches use an optional skate the morning after a big win as a reward.

Just judging by Hartley's past actions, this was probably a reward for a good job.
