One of the things from last night that impressed me the most was - and I think one of the key reasons for the 3rd period turn around, was how our smaller guys like Byron and Gaudreau got aggressive on the forecheck in the Anaheim zone.
On that third goal it was a thing of beauty to see Johnny out muscle a guy on the boards who had 50 lbs on him, and come away with the puck and then a sweet feed to Wides.
In the third last night - it was more about the size of the fight in the dog rather than the size of the dog in the fight!

Thanks again for another great read.
Should probably be Laddy Smid not Lady though. Thought you were calling him an effeminate warrior for a second

Good read - thanks Bingo! There's a typo though...

2.Markus Granlund: Rookie continues to show he’s the real deal. Tom Erixon who? Picks up two assists and is +3 against monster centers from Anaheim.

Great writeup as usual. I agree with everything except the last sentence in 'Odds and Ends' section - I think that Ferland should be given another chance against the Hawks before being sent down. The guy battled through a knee injury, was great in Penticton and pre-season, and finally made it to his NHL debut.
I'd say give him another chance.

A lot of talk about lines when the Flames get healthy, there are so many combinations. I think it obvious that Monahan, Backlund, Granlund and Stajan are the centers. I’d move Colborne into Jones spot with Glencross and Monahan. Leave the Granlund line alone, have Jones and one of Byron or Jooris play with Backlund, and then a fourth line of Stajan between Bollig and Bouma. Did I forget anyone?

Completely agree with this:

So assuming someone is always hurt no problem, but if they get healthy then you have to send Jooris down and scratch Byron which can't be the plan.

Ha, this is exactly the problem I've been mulling over...... if everyone is healthy have the young kids forced us into a trade, if so who?
I'm thinking if Glencross gets hot he's the guy, not much left on his contract, free agency looming, move him as soon as he's worth anything.

I would guess that at any given time most teams are missing at least one forward.

Even if we assume that this team will never be healthy this season, it is still awfully crowded up front. I think a forward can really be traded at any time, and it won't hurt the Flames at all moving forward.

I'm really curious to see how the Flames respond against Chicago after such a jubilant success last night.
Conventional wisdom would assume they'll come out flat and satisfied and get crushed. But nothing about this team is conventional. Hoping Hartley and Gio can keep everyone looking towards next game.

Beating the Hawks under any circumstances is tough, but it has to be 30% more difficult if they don't get Russell back.
Such a difference without him on that 2nd pairing.

No word on the injury? I can't find it anywhere.
Here's a question on the forwards: How much does it affect leadership and chemistry if you move Glencross for a 2nd to make room for the kids? Good plan or bad?
Setoguchi must go, even if only to the press box permanently.

I think that the Wideman/Smid first period debacle was materially contributed to by Tim Jackman going out of his way to fight Engellend and not Bollig or McGratton.
It didn't leave the Flames a lot of time to let the #2 pair mesh together with protected shifts early in the game.

That might be the only compliment i've ever given Jackman, who didn't press the issue nearly enough as a Flame, imo.
