If there's one silver lining with all these injuries, it's that the injured players and the recalled players all have their salaries count within the cap system, so they're building a pretty good cushion above the floor right now.
Also, Setoguchi has one of the lowest cap hits on the team, so he won't be kept around just to reach the floor. He might be kept around because it's better to have him as the 13th forward who sees limited action than one of the young guys who need the playing time.
The two players who have been talked about the most with regards to being kept around just to hit the floor are Jones and Wideman, and so far, they're both playing very well. They may not be earning the full value of their contracts, but they're also not dragging the whole team down.

I think Ferland has earned and will be given a few games to show his stuff probably starting Thursday with Chicago. He adds a lot of toughness along with scoring.

Yup. But if we fall out of contention, that cushion will help if we want to move some $ players at the deadline.

Agreed, but since McGrattan and/or Bollig can be the 13th forward without issue, buh-bye.

Plus, Jones keeps getting hurt, which keeps a roster spot warm.

Depending on which Flame comes back from IR. Based on productivity and performance Setoguchi should be the #1 candidate to get bumped. It will probably be Sven even though he has looked better. Setoguchi has proven time and time again he offers very little for this team. Even though Hartley sees otherwise.
Honestly Seto Is the only player i think Hartley is making a mistake on.
Granlund and Jooris have to stay.

I was going to say Setoguchi has been better than Bollig, but I looked at the stats...
Setoguchi is -7 in 11 games, on a team that's +10 and has 14 forwards at 0 or better +/-? Wow. (Closest skater is Engelland at -4.)

There is no way you can cut Granlund.
He has 8 points in 9 games and has been playing well. Same thing to Jooris. Jooris is too good to be playing in the AHL.
Reinhard and Sven go back to the AHL.
And I would waive Bolig & Setoguchi as well.
McGratton should be kept around for his dressing room presence (healthy scratch)

It will be Sven first because he is better off being bumped down to top-six in Addy than he is 13th forward in Calgary. The one thing Seto can do right now is occupy the dead weight spot in the roster. But he is very close to being squeezed out of even that.

Role matters too. Bollig is a 4th line guy. Setoguchi would be completely pointless on the 4th line.

I think if Russell is out for a few games, but not long enough to warrant being placed on IR, we see Reinhart being replaced with Wotherspoon.

Yeah, at least Bollig hits a lot. (I would guess easily the highest hits/TOI on the team, if someone kept track of such a stat.)
So agreed, Setoguchi is easily the first to go on this team. I'm guessing the only reason he's still around is because they're hoping another team gets so desperate with injuries even Setoguchi will do as filler.

Simply put, our 4th line doesn't need to be a "can't play hockey 5 minutes a night grinder" type line anymore with this depth, so grats, while a great guy, has to go, along with seto and bollig. They collectively have been totally underwhelming, and engelland is doing all the tough guy stuff for the flames as of late anyways

Heh
To be fair, number of hits is a rather meaningless number if it isn't adjusted either by number of shifts or TOI.

You gotta think some of the smaller forwards don't have a long-term future with the team. Gaudreau isn't going anywhere. So I suspect two of the following players will not be in the organzation in 12 months: Hudler, Byron, Baertschi, Granlund.

Wouldn't want to see any of those guys let go really. Granlund you have to keep. Hudler is an important piece but he probably gets you your best return. The other two not sure you would get a whole lot so we're probably better off keeping them and allowing them to improve.

When I look at this roster I am starting to see a distinct lack of truculence.
I love the team we have now but I am worried more than anything that Burke thinks we have a distinct lack of his favourite noun. Bouma, Smid, Engelland, sometimes Gio, Bollig and Big Ern when he plays... Ferland maybe, but other than that I can't really say the team is as big or as tough as Burke seems to prefer.
I'm worried that all it will take is a short losing skid and vets coming off the IR for word to come down to Treliving that it's time to use some of the teams speed and skill to bring in toughness that can play more minutes.
The team is having success but not in the form management envisioned.

Reason: forgot Bouma!

I'm not saying I want to give them up either. But if management really does want the team to get bigger, what options do they have? Stajan is sticking around. I can't see them moving out Raymond already. Look at the lines and show me how the team can get bigger without moving out a couple of those guys I mentioned.
Getting bigger doesn't mean adding a fourth-liner or two. It means adding bigger guys to the top nine. And you're not going to get bigger guys who can really play on the cheap. The Flames will have to give up quality to get quality.

I really think Burke is misleading when he uses the word truculence. IMO, he would consider a Byron truculent in his own way as he plays as if he is 6'2".
Project next years team with Colborne, Bennett and Wotherspoon (off the top of my head) and I really dont think any moves need to be made to make us more truculent...just need to wait for the players we already have to be ready!

You must have missed Burke's comment the other day when he said the team still needs to get bigger.

What's the point in icing big guys for the sake of icing big guys when they play 7 minutes out of a 60 minute hockey game
The reason you need to be "big" in the pacific is because of the likes of getzlaf, perry, Thornton , kopitar, etc who ern isn't getting matched up with

There isn't. That's why guys like Big Ern have played 2 out of the last 10 games, the style of game is passing him by. Burke has said as much, you have to have big guys who can play. Big for the sake of big has not been Burke's mantra since coming to Calgary. You can argue moves like Westgarth, but again he never re-signed after it was clear he couldn't keep up 10-15 minutes a game.
