Default Calgary Flames Culture Starting To Catch Notice

Glen Healy on the Jeff Blair show today had a few positive observations on Calgary.

He said the way Hartley runs the morning skate and the level of effort exerted by the players exceeds any other team in the NHL.

He also noted that after the game, as the players hopped on their exercise bikes they pulled on t-shirts that had "always earned, never given" emblazoned on them.

He said you get a feeling of team identity in Calgary you don't see with the Leafs and other teams.

I LOLed in the game when they commented on the morning skate and showed a clip. It was McGrattan being bag skated (I read the black aces were given extra work).

Hartley, Gelinas and the coaching staff have done a fantastic job building a solid culture among the team. Haven't seen this since D. Sutter was behind the bench.

Iggy would have never stood for any of this.

I think the change in the team has been impressive.

Hahaha!! Healy talks about how Calgary is doing it right with "always earned, never given". Then 3 minutes later he says that even though Bernier hasn't earned the #1 he should be given it because he would relish the opportunity and if you give him the net he'll get on a roll.

funny how little things like a workout t-shirt may be making an impact.....perhaps all that is preventing me from becoming a successful hockey coach is a catchy slogan......

I kinda think Glenn Healy just feels like he needs to start saying nice things about Calgary before we collectively burn him at the steak.

A classic - Al Pacino's "Inches" speech from Any Given Sunday.

The interesting thing about all of this was the TSN hype when Eakins was first hired as a coach. There was a whole segment on how he was a fitness nut and how tough training camp was going to be for the Oilers.

Fast forward to today, and there really is no evidence of improvement in the Oilers fitness levels and no one can say that the Oilers are a hard working team

ie, Edmonton is no good

Part of it is the veterans as well. Guys like Gio, STajan and even McGrattan know what it takes to be in the NHL. I'd say the words of guy like Stajan is an important role model this way - not much in the way of talent - keeps a job based on fitness and work.

The Edmonton kids are kids and therefore immortal and will never be fat unless taught differently.

Glenn Healy is an ass hat. He's nothing more than a blow hard whose only qualification for the position that he's in is that he is louder than 99% of the population.

I hope members of the Flames organization and their fans don't forget about the crap he's been spewing for a long time.

A huge part is the vets. They know what it takes and set a good example.
