You are serious, right? Pre-injury last season Wideman was playing the most minutes for the Flames and was very effective. He went down with hand injury I think and his game went down. They started playing him with Butler, Smith or whoever. Then went Hartley reunite him with Russell, he started playing well again. I can see that no matter how well Wideman plays, it won't please you. I am not saying he is the best D for the Flames and yes there are times I do not like the way he plays but I do not HATE the guy and I still think he is effective. Oh yeah I also go past his high salary and most of the time I enjoyed watching him play.

With Raymond and Colborne on their way back and Jones out yet again, I'm guessing the Flames send Reinhart down first, which leaves a line up of:

Curtis Glencross – Sean Monahan – Mason Raymond
Johnny Gaudreau – Markus Granlund – Jiri Hudler
Sven Baertschi – Josh Jooris – Paul Byron
Brandon Bollig – Lance Bouma - Joe Colborne

Then, when Setoguchi gets back, they'll have to re-evaluate and see if Baertschi's been able to show enough consistently to force the Flames to cut their experiment with Setoguchi and send the vet down. If Baertschi doesn't make his mark, he goes down.

EDIT: Shoot, forgot about Backlund and Ferland. Man, this team is deep.

Backlund's return probably means Granlund goes down (don't think you can send Jooris down anymore) and Ferland will be in the three-way battle with Setoguchi and Baertschi for the one spot available.

Treliving will probably start putting out feelers on interest in Glencross soon, assuming he hasn't already, and when that move is made, opens up an additional spot for one of the kids.

If someone from the defence goes down with an injury, it'll be interesting to see how well Wotherspoon performs on his call up. If he can do what guys like Jooris and Granlund have done, it'll give the Flames a lot more confidence to move a guy like Smid for a pick, etc.
It's still a very small sample size to say that all these kids are ready for the NHL grind day in and day out from now 'til the end of their careers.

Glencross is 5th in scoring, 2 pts. behind the phenom and he hasn't been "on" yet.

Maybe the answer will a continuation of how we got to see these kids play in the first place - continual injuries.

Backs, Jones sure have this aptitude.

I can see Jones, and possibly one of Stajan or Wideman being traded should an opportunity come along. Our needs would include a younger shutdown type D or Right wing depth.

SETo= 14th forward, failed experiment.
Bollig has been a healthy scratch and meh at best.
Engellend is the most expensive 6th-7th dman in the league.
Diaz on the PTO was a no harm no foul but less than brilliant.

Hiller has been spectacular, exceeding all expectations but feel as though he was the most obvious choice for free agent net minders.

Outside of Hiller his acquisitions have been less than spectacular.
Treliving's acquisitions this summer need to be viewed by the roles these players were acquired to fill.

Top six forward with 20 goal potential when healthy - Raymond. Good signing, next to no $ on a short term. Win.

Veteran netminder capable of providing stiff competition for Ramo, who you still think is talented, but aren't sold on as a legit #1. Also must be comfortable getting 50 shots from time to time without freaking out - Hiller. Big win.

Bottom six forward with toughness who can take a regular shift while still being a credible deterrent because Big Ern, while loveable, is limited - Bollig. Meh. OT loss. Not great, but hasn't been a liability, tries, fights, and came from Chicago. can't have enough guys who've seen first hand the effort and work all those great players put in.

Bottom pairing D with size and toughness who can play some 2nd PP and block shots - Engelland. Loss, since he's constantly getting walked around and hemmed in, but whatever. I'd rather pay Engelland 3M than pay SOB 2M to do the same thing. Term doesn't hurt us.

7th defenseman - Diaz. Shootout loss. Hartley saw him in Switzerland and likes him. He also just went to the Finals with the Rangers. Why not? What is anyone really expecting from the 7th D?

Setoguchi should be put on waivers when players like Raymond, Colburne, Stajan are set to return. Johnny, Jooris and Granlund are all much better on this roster.

I think Granlund will stay with us until Stajan is ready to come back.

I'd like to see any of Seto, GlenX and Jones traded for draft picks this year.

But I don't know that any of them get you much.

The young players have shown they can handle the load, heck guys like Granlund are 40-45 games into their careers now. Flames would be OK in 15/16 without any of them.

Wideman is worth his contract. I am happy if they keep him and sure they'll get a good return now if they do move him.
