I don't know the financials, but it is possible that it is just cheaper to put players in hotels than maintain condo(s) for just players in transition. and would it make sense to have that condo when in all practicality it will be mostly empty for a good chunk of the year
|
Further the Flames are not in the business of maintaining condos

Yeah. What's really important here is finding out why 2 single guys with a combined income of over 3.5 million bucks feel the need to have a roommate?
Sit down a minute here Sonny....hell, back in my day we had roommates for lack of income reasons, not cuz we were lonely or anything!

I think it makes sense for two young single guys to live together whether they are rich or not. Johnny being a rookie in the league and brand new to the city he probably felt lonely and rooming with a good vet will be good for him.
Now they can play video games and have parties with single ladies together haha.

to all those saying the flames should buy condos for the players?...they own the international hotel downtown and this is where all the players stay when they are called up or have yet to been told to get a house or apartment.

I know in the past the Flames put players who were not yet solidified on the team in long-term style hotels - something that is basically in between a hotel room and renting an apartment.
I suspect that's what they still do - but that's a mouthful to explain in a sound bite or article - so instead we hear that they have "moved out of a hotel", when in reality that doesn't really reflect the style of accommodations.

The Flames don't own The International, Alvin Libin, one Flames' owner, does.
And it is a condo-style hotel.

Same reason why the team had Monahan lined up with Hudler and/or Joel Otto. Habits outside the home are probably emphasized just as much as habits on the ice. Things like nutrition, lifestyle, etc are probably best learned from a more experienced pro.

Who players live with, sit next to, and hotel with has been news for as long as I have watched hockey, about 1979. As others have alluded to, there is a lot of reasons for players to live, travel and bunk with.
Is this the same in other sports?

Yeah this is true, hiring a cleaning company, paying condo fees, property tax and utilities probably makes it just all around easier to do hotels. Especially if they've got existing hotel partners they know they can rely on.

Hudler did this last year with Monahan. The idea the people we have in place on the leadership team are willing to go out of their way and open their homes to younger inexperienced NHLers in my mind is awesome. All while teaching them how to prepare day in and day out is fantastic.

Pretty sure veterans invite rookies to room with them on every NHL team. This isn't a Flames thing, it's an NHL thing.

Ya it's definitely common around the NHL. It's good to see though. I'm sure it helps with the transition.

I wonder if Russell volunteered to take Johnny in, or if Hartley walked into a team meeting, and the first thing he said was "Who likes Skittles?", and instantly, Johnny's hand went up, followed quickly by Russell's and Hartley simply said "Kris, you've got a new roommate".
That's how I'm going to believe it happened.

A potential landing spot is with assistant captain Kris Russell. Gaudreau said rooming with Sean Monahan and Lance Bouma is another option.

I believe the flames do own in the ArriVa as a handful of players have stayed there for short periods of time.
When it comes to hotels, I know one of the players told me they got a discount at hotel arts. (again, perhaps this goes back to the CBA because a organization offering a small discount made no sense.)
