Weird, I had seen this video a couple months ago and actually thought of it today as I was riding.

I was in a similar accident with 2 cars once. The speed wasn't that fast but insurance deemed the speeder at fault for 30%

Yes, drivers need to focus more, but bikes need to slow down.

This is one reason why I'll always be a car guy and not a bike guy. Your fault, not your fault, it doesn't matter...if something goes wrong, you're the one who's screwed. This is the main thing. I know full well that's the case.

Frankly I got a bike this summer and it's amazing. I would recommend it, and would recommend taking the course to anyone interested. The course isn't going to kill you, but you get to learn to ride, and it's totally worth it!

This kid was riding like an idiot. Don't get me wrong; I took my bike to Montana this summer where the speed limit is higher and maybe exceeded it a little, just because, but it's a divided highway that was wide open. Brilliant idea? Maybe not. I could have gotten a ticket or maybe an animal runs out (from the bald prairies mind you) but it was a pretty safe way to see what 140 felt like for a minute. To me that's a whole different ballgame from what he was doing though. I actually feel worse for the guy turning left here. I would have nightmares forever in that situation.

The rate of speed is essentially highly illegal in today's environment. In Canada, he would have his license revoked and potentially charged criminally. The Calgary Sun and Herald commonly post extreme speeding cases such as this as major news.

The driver of the car is not at fault, and I feel bad that they have to live with that for the rest of their life. Would have been ideal if the driver could have prevented this.

Well he was turning right not left, but as a guy who has been riding since he was 6 years old. IT is sad to see another rider die, I have seen 3 ppl killed on bikes since I got my class 6 when i was 16. But going almost 100mph in a 60 zone? are you nuts. The chance of that car seeing him as he made that tight pass before would be next to impossible.

Its crazy the dmg to the car as well..

I would suggest that this would be viewed as a split liability.

lol yes, and the driver was coming at the bike and turned in front of him.


Meaning is the driver is going north and the bike south, the car made a turn right to go east.

160 is fast, but the stupidest part is that he's going 160 on a road like that. An undivided 2 lane road where people turn right (left) in front of him. Pretty much asking for it.

Judging by that picture of the damaged car, the road is very curved at this section too.

I haven't watched the video, but it looks like the bike was likely coming around that bend and if so, no chance the car sees him at that speed.

What bend? It seemed pretty darn straight the whole way.

Get a bike...take LOTS of training (and use it)...don't buy too much power...dress for the slide and not the ride

Do these things and you have removed all possible risk that you can...is motorcycling still hazardous...of course.

Just the fact that you have your mind occupied with safety is a good sign.

In my opinion, the biker is completely at fault. One thing all riders are taught is that you have to be aware of everyone on the road and assume they never see you. As a biker, you're the one paying the price, not the car or truck you hit. An apprentice of mine lost his life in an accident that is the same as this. Protective gear or not, there is no gear in this world rated to take a direct impact at 165kph. Gear is generally tested for it's capacity to mitigate damage from slides, not the force of an airborne impact. When you ride outside of what your gear is protecting you from, you're always at fault.

I can't do it, every single person I've known that's owned a bike has crashed or nearly died. 100% is too high for me to ever ride one. Safe riding or not you can't force the other drivers to pay attention.
