Frankly, that doesn't look much different from what the Rolling Stones demand when they play a show.

The thing I'm not so keen on is the tens of billions of dollars in facilities. J imagine with tens of billions of dollars of construction activity in Alberta, and the severe labour crunch that would accompany it, would do to the budget of oilsands developments and other big capital projects in the province. The buildup to the 88 Olympics happened when Calgary needed a boost in economic activity to take a bite out unemployment. Completely different situation today.

There's a reason sensible democracies like Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden are backing out of Winter Olympic bids. Soon hosting the Olympics will be confined to dictatorships.

I think Canada's bid would address some of the spending issues for hosting major sporting events. Much like Lillehammer (I believe) was the "Green Olympics" and began the environmental movement within the Olympics, perhaps Calgary pushes for sustainability?

No sports facilities have even been officially designed yet. They haven't even gone out to an RFP stage (which there will be, because if there's even an ounce of public money, it has to go this route).

There's no possible way that someone can say that the arena will look like a 'cowboy hat' considering a) there has been no design-build, design-build-finance-maintain or P3 procurement method established to pay for official design submissions at this stage yet, and b) no architect in their right mind is going to design something that looks like a cowboy hat, much less the Flames actually wanting something that looks like that.

As you say, when this is all said and done, it's going to be not just a world-class facility, but a world-class district at the end.

So what I'm thinking by reading this is that the only thing we may hear in the much anticipated announcement rumoured to take place before the end of the year will be.. "we'll announce something within 6 months".
