I don't care where the Arena gets built, as long as the new Arena has separate washrooms for Canucks Fans.

Could be possible the new arena and new stamps stadium are located at different spots?

Not Really, this is off the cities website. there is a link to the project page above.

Those plans are 4 years old now, but McMahon is untouched in these plans

McMahon has nothing to do with those plans, because the plans are only about the city owned lands (Foothills Athletic Park) McMahon and the surrounding area is owned by the university and administered by the McMahon Stadium Society. There would have to be a whole lot of intergovernmental cooperation to get that whole area together for one use, let alone one that would give main benefit to a private company, and significantly reduce amateur sporting opportunities in the city.

Please, please, PLEASE, tell me that the new facility is NOT going to be shaped like a cowboy hat or any other damn western paraphernalia? That would be an embarrassment the city would have to live down for decades. Please tell me this project is going to be a world class facility with a facade to match.

Disagree with what he said was going to happen.

No sports facilities have even been officially designed yet. They haven't even gone out to an RFP stage (which there will be, because if there's even an ounce of public money, it has to go this route).

There's no possible way that someone can say that the arena will look like a 'cowboy hat' considering a) there has been no design-build, design-build-finance-maintain or P3 procurement method established to pay for official design submissions at this stage yet, and b) no architect in their right mind is going to design something that looks like a cowboy hat, much less the Flames actually wanting something that looks like that.

As you say, when this is all said and done, it's going to be not just a world-class facility, but a world-class district at the end.

I have zero inside knowledge and likely know less about architecture and Calgary city politics than most on here but I doubt that there is a new Stampeders stadium built unless it is in connection with the Flames arena.

My guess is that the options for the Stampeders are a. new stadium in conjunction with arena project b. stay in McMahon, maybe with upgrades.

I just can't see how anyone justifies building a new football stadium unless it is tied in with a much larger entertainment district project.

This is pretty much what the majority of people are speculating....there will be a large sports and entertainment complex with some extra ice, user areas for local use. At some point someone leaked a project valued over a billion which would mean more than just a rink for the Flames.

don't think anyone around here thinks there is a new football stadium unless part of a big picture project.

The justification is quite simple. McMahon is an embarrassing dump. [/justification]

Put me in the camp that thinks this project should be combined with an Olympic bid to get some Federal money.

That's a possibility. From what I read cities are running and hiding from the Olympics, more specifically the winter one. We have the facilities here already for the most part it would be way cheaper than going full-Putin, or even 1/20th-Putin. Upgrades and some new facilities would work.

I think it would be extremely hard to match the payoffs Bejing will give out for 2022 games. You would be talking about billions in payoffs to IOC members to try for the games.

or are you talking about 2026 or later?

If you've seen the list of demands the IOC makes to any host city, you'd be in the "They can go #### themselves" camp. Canada should never, ever get involved in an IOC/FIFA related competition again. Horrible, corrupt organizations.

Can you give us a couple of examples of their demands? Not that I doubt you; just asking because you seem to be knowledgeable on the subject.

The IOC's ridiculous demands are the reported reason why Norway pulled their 2022 bid:

Quote:
- They demand to meet the king prior to the opening ceremony. Afterwards, there shall be a cocktail reception.

- Drinks shall be paid for by the Royal Palace or the local organizing committee.

- Separate lanes should be created on all roads where IOC members will travel, which are not to be used by regular people or public transportation.

- A welcome greeting from the local Olympic boss and the hotel manager should be presented in IOC members’ rooms, along with fruit and cakes of the season. (Seasonal fruit in Oslo in February is a challenge…)

- The hotel bar at their hotel should extend its hours “extra late” and the minibars must stock Coke products.

- The IOC president shall be welcomed ceremoniously on the runway when he arrives.

- The IOC members should have separate entrances and exits to and from the airport.

- During the opening and closing ceremonies a fully stocked bar shall be available. During competition days, wine and beer will do at the stadium lounge.

- IOC members shall be greeted with a smile when arriving at their hotel.
