People missing tie games is mind bottling.

Do you also miss the red line and only being able to pass backwards??

"Hey hun, how was the game?"

"Awesome! Nobody won!"

You may as well be watching 6 year olds playing soccer where no one keeps score.

This is exactly it--the issue has never really been with the shootout (although it's merits are debatable), it's been the fact that some NHL games give out 2 points total, and others give out 3. If the NHL refuses to go back to the straight out tie (which is what I used to root for when the Oilers and Canucks played each other), then make ALL games worth 3 points; 3 for regulation win, 2 for OT/Shootout win, 1 for OT/Shootout loss.

As for the concept of 4 on 4 then 3 on 3, it's interesting, but not original. Anyone remember that old-timers hockey league from the 90s/maybe early 2000s, that featured actual 'original six' (please, no Keith Olbermann links) players? I can't remember the name of the league, but they employed the "lose a player after a while" overtime method. It was actually pretty fun--I think the Flames would benefit from this change, if it occurred.

5 mins 4 on 4 and 5 mins of 3 on 3. Hockey already have the tightest length of the big 4 (asides from the odd NBA blowout) so I don't see the big issue with extending things a bit. Aside from the odd NBC games, I can't see the networks having an issue with it (would viewership not be highest for OT)?

Would also like to see 3 pts for reg win, 2 for ot/SO win, and 1 for OT/SO loss.

We really need the 3-2-1 point format.
3 pts regulation win
2 pts OT/SO win
1 pt OT/SO loss

Teams should be rewarded for winning the game in regulation

It's not that we miss ties, we just hate the damn shootout.

I would rather "lose" in a tie than a stupid breakaway competition where rebounds don't count

I know some fans hate ties but the way I looked at it was that a win at home was a win, a tie on the road was also a win as the aim was to go .500 on the road. A tie at home was a lose. So a tie wasn't just a tie, it depended on where you were playing.

I would prefer that they were focusing on changing the point system (either 3-2-1 or 4-3-2-1) but this is a step in the right direction and doesn't prevent them from changing the point system as well.

Yes, all games should be worth the same amount of points. But I would rather just ditch the loser point than go to 1-2-3.

I just like the simplicity of wins and losses. The 1-2-3 format is 2 types of wins, and 2 types of losses. So for example the Flames could have a record of 21-9-18-4. Also, during the stretch run in April, imagine what it would be like to try and figure out your teams magic number.

Sports is about winning and losing. Nothing else. Have a system that is only about winning and losing.

And like I said before, the OT format debate is interesting but also futile, because everybody has a slightly different opinion and nobody really seems willing to change their mind. I wouldn't mind seeing the 3v3 format though.

If there can't be sudden death overtime for the regular season then keep it as is for the playing structure and the 3-2-1 point structure. I find it funny that people refer to the shootout as not a natural part of the game yet are okay with 4 on 4 then going to 3 on 3. That format truly is beer league.

Atleast with 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 you still win the game as a team.

leave OT structure like it is, get rid of the loser point. No 3 point BS games between conference rivals competing for a playoff spot.

^^^, Exactly what I want, with OT having 10 minutes of 4 on 4. Would definitely give teams more of an incentive to win in regulation.

My idea - each team gets a 5-on-4 PP. If no winner after that, call it a tie. Stop putting teams in the playoffs on crap gimmicks.

Boo.. Hisss... Shootouts are awesome. More shootouts. 5 minutes 5 on 5, then a shootout, straight win-loss system.

5 minutes of 5 on 5 sudden death OT. Loser gets zero points. If still tied after 5 minutes, the game ends in a tie and each team gets one point.
