Icon33 Stars trade Sergei Gonchar to Habs for Travis Moen

http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=738664

Quote:
Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the acquisition of defenseman Sergei Gonchar from the Dallas Stars, in return for forward Travis Moen.

Gonchar, 40, recorded one assist in three games thus far with the Stars in 2014-15, averaging 13:01 of ice time per game. He missed the first 11 games of the season with a foot injury.

Gonchar has a cap hit of $5million. expires this season

Moen has a cap hit of $1.85million. expires after next season

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
The Stars retain eight percent of Gonchar's salary in the trade

this is a good trade for the habs. They get rid of mowen and get a serviceable (but over paid) vet in the process. If Gonchar gets going, this could really work out for them.

Bourque going to Hamilton makes the cap room a non-issue. Pretty much a wash.

Why would Dallas do this trade? Cap space?

not really, putting Bourque in the AHL only provides $925k cap relief

after the Stars retain 8% and subtraction of Moen, and then the relief from Bourque this deal costs the Habs $1.825 million in cap space

pretty much, been reported that Nill has wanted to make some moves but didn't have the space to do so.

So is this a precursor for another Dallas trade? Everything I read was that they were looking for a dman.

apparently it was so they would have a roster spot:

Kevin Weekes @KevinWeekes
As per @DallasStars Source : Gonchar was great leader for our young players, this trade opens spot for Klingberg who's young R shot D-Man that is super skilled, has 12 Pts in 10 games w AHL Stars.Moen will offset injuries to Eakin/others and should help Penalty Kill.

Gonchar sucks and is paid a ton.

Moen isn't winning any awards anytime soon but is the physical, responsible bottom 6 guy that teams seem to be looking for lately (see Bollig talk in PGT thread).

I am not sure why Montreal would do it when they are already soft and weak defensively as it is. Gonchar doesn't seem to add much at this point other than a big salary.

Yeah, Gonchar hasn't been good for a while now. Montreal is getting desperate. Doesn't help that Markov has looked horrible.

I wonder if Montreal would like to dump Gonchar to create space for a better defensemen. Eating Gonchar's contract for a pick could be a nice move for us.

No chance they are going to give up a pick. Gonchar contract expires at seasons end. 1/4 of the contract has been paid, and 8% of the remaining $ is being paid by Dallas .

If we clear 4.6m off of their cap, Montreal has a lot of flexibility to go out and improve their roster this year either via a rental or longer term instantly. That's worth something. Montrael fans are convinced they're going to pursue an upper class RW so having that flexibility is key.
