Trade Glencross and Ramo at the deadline, probably for picks and a bad contract or two. That will take up some cash.

I'd rather trade for picks and youth than sign a UFA or take on a long-term high-cap veteran salary. I want our next big contracts to go to our prospects.

If a young D between Brodie and Russell skill-wise comes along you pay handsomely for them, but we have so much up and coming talent in the forward ranks that it seems like it would be a waste to overpay for an established winger/center.

Doing nothing is better than taking on a bad contract. Pay Gio, see if anyone wants to come here. There has to be a UFA or two that looks at Calgary and likes what they see.

If giordano keeps playing like he has... His payday is going to be huge. Save the cap space for that and just stay the course.

The Flames should spend more money on minor league mascots. Whatever is currently in the budget for this is clearly not enough. Double or triple it, whatever it takes!

Also, a new arena, new jerseys, and a top 4 defenceman would be nice.

Hell...for the first time in what seems like forever we've actually got some lower-drafted players making an impact.

This. They're backs arent against the wall.

I think you also have to be careful not to send the wrong message when you make a trade. Right now you have 23 (more if you want to count the walking wounded) players pull the team in the same direction. Management has been from day one saying you play to win the games, which is why I don't think you will see the Flames making a trade on trade deadline day that makes them a worse team when all is said and done (i.e. trading Hiller).

The one benefit from the youth injection is some of the veterans are being made expendable. It is extremely fortunate right now that the play is being carried by the young players plus Gio and Hiller.

edit: I should mention that above only matters if they make it to the trade deadline and they are in the thick of things.

The worst trades get made when your back is against the wall. That's the last time you'd want to make a trade IMO, but it's often when teams do.

I actually think if the Flames keep this up for a little while longer, now would be the perfect time to make some moves. The key though, is to still stay focused on some long term improvement moves, versus getting sucked in to some short term shore ups.

Dealing from a spot of strength for example. Does the team have some thoughts as to where some of our younger forward prospects are netting out, and might they be open to moving some of the guys that have potential but aren't at the top of the list to maybe ad some more depth in the form of youth on the back end? I think now would be the perfect time for those type of trades, but of course very easy for me to say hypothetically.

If we are spending money on a defence man we should use Brodie's extension rate in our negotiations. Man, how pumped do you think Treleving is to have that out of the way given his performance since? I would imagine a Brodie extension near the deadline would completely change our options going forward. Such a solid move

I really wish the flames were able to get the Ribeiro deal through. If we can use our capspace to acquire young top-tier talent that is ideal.

That said, I think the Flames should keep on spending money how they did last offseason. (With the exception of the Engelland contract obviously.)

Sign effective players on tradeable contracts. If we can grab our Hossa somehow pull the trigger.

If the flames start acquiring high priced help, there is a district danger this team will morph into the teams from 2006 to 2010......stay the course, get the right pieces when it makes sense.
