If Cherry stopped messing up names, complaining about his screen time, and bouncing around 5 different topics at once, he might be able to accomplish something in his 5 minutes. Help us all if Healy gets his spot after Cherry leaves.

Sittler, Gio, bouma, kane, charities, there was never any solid points made about any of those things, including the charity. I think the increase in time would allow him to at least make a point about a topic and still remark about the things he wants to talk about while giving the network 5 solid minutes they could air instead of 5 minutes of rambling.
I don't know if people would go out of their way to search for Coach's Corner online. It's just an intermission thing that people enjoy.

“But I guess I gotta stop having so many coffees before, to get carried away. But oh well, everybody was watching, anyhow.”
National Post has requested to speak with Rogers executives in charge of the decision.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen this week,” Cherry told the radio hosts. “But who knows? I say what I think and it gets you in trouble sometimes.”
He was on the air for nearly 10 minutes on Monday. One host offered him “10, 11 minutes, whatever you want,” to return.
“Maybe I’ll need the job by next Monday,” Cherry said, with a chuckle.

He was a mess on Saturday, I couldn't follow his train of thought at all.. literally 1 sentence on one topic, and then jumping to something completely unrelated. I don't think he is trying to get himself canned, just that old age has caught up to him.

Cherry's attraction is basically his 'blue collar working man' rants, including complaints against employers and government.

He knows what he is doing.

Even if everyone disagreed with what he was saying, that is what we expect from the guy.

With that said, the majority of paintbrush comments he makes are wrong. The coaching observations he makes are usually bang on.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would he try to get fired when he can just quit?

I think if you asked him these days, he'd probably do it for less if they gave him more time.

I'd actually be okay if they gave him the whole intermission. At least he'd be able to get out a complete thought.

That video was awesome.

As far as I'm concerned if he get's 1 second of airtime it's to much. Cherry hasn't been able to consistently form an insightful coherent sentence in years. What little time he get's is already a waste.

Severence package? Plus he probably knows that if he quits there won't be as many people rabbling about his absence.

He used to have his own weekly TV show called Grapevine back in the 80's

I don't think it's a dumb article, whether you like it or not Cherry, McLean and Coach's Corner have been a big part of HNIC and by proxy a huge part of the Canadian Culture. So yeah it's a bit of a big deal when Cherry and McLean do their biggest segment of the year (The Remembrance day tribute to the troops) and spend most of it complaining about being short changed on time.

Given how annoyed both Cherry and McLean have been at the changes to the HNIC broadcasts, I can guarantee they quit next year and I wouldn't be shocked if they quit before the end of the year. And again where you like it or not, Coach's Corner is a huge deal to the casual HNIC viewer and Canadians. To me it seems as though the head honchos at Rogers are doing all they can to push Cherry and McLean out, which is a massive, massive mistake.

this is reminding me of the old SCTV bit where Bill Needle's Mailbag kept getting whittled down until he had three seconds of airtime.

I gotta wonder how much time is left on Cherry's contract anyways. If Rogers hadn't secured the NHL rights, would Don be working another 5 seasons anyways?

Neither of them will quit in the middle of the season and it's doubtful either quit period. I am fine with what Rogers is doing as MacLean's shtick was getting old on HNIC and Cherry is 80 years old and even a mediocre station like RSN has to have an eye on the future. What some think was a "huge deal" in Cherry & MacLean was a huge turnoff for others. They have both run their course and for better or worse (please god no more Kypreos) HNIC is going to change throughout the years.

I fear they would give the Coach's Corner time slot to Healy so I am all for keeping Ron and Don. At least Cherry speaks with emotion with regards to the game everyone else is just out for internet hits with crappy commentary and inflammatory "analysis".

Also, I feel this is part of Sportsnet's agenda to slowly do away with Hockey Night in Canada. So that in 6 years, when the deal with the CBC is done, they can wipe it away and just have their own identity.

4 years after that, we'll see the CBC fold and disappear.
