Similar thing happened to me, unlocked doors with Oilers tickets on the dash, came back and I had a pair of Canuck tickets too.
Damn thieves leaving their trash!

Then you charge that person. Having illegal drugs is illegal whether you hide it or not. As another stated, if you have nothing to hide there is nothing to worry about.

so police are now allowed to just randomly invade your privacy and do vehicle searches? if its not against the law in calgary to leave your car unlocked the cop has no probable cause. or am i out to lunch?

Of course some people will be upset when their personal property is invaded...by intruders AND the police.

It isn't like that at all. The cops aren't searching anyone's cars here they locked doors.
I always want my doors locked and would be happy if I forgot to and the cops did it for and am in the I don't have anything to hide so no skin off my back so I support this.
But reading CP I have found there are a ton of people out there with an unhealthy view on cops so not surprised that this gets a negative, over the top reaction.

To me this is terrible. I used to leave my car unlocked with keys in the console. I would have been locked out. I also follow the doors unlocked, nothing of value left in the car philosophy because I don't want smashed windows.
I don't think I have ever forgotten to lock a car door. It has always been Intentional. I don't care about the privacy rights argument I just want my stuff to be left the way I left it.

As others have stated, I don't always want my doors locked and I'd be happy if the cops minded their own business and stayed out of mine.
Now do you honestly think that if I don't want my doors locked that I have something to hide?

I wouldn't be the least but surprised if they just stuffed it back in and left tbh, I don't think Calgary cops give too much of a crap about a bag of weed. Regardless, I don't think they could charge the owner with anything, could they?

I am surprised by the amount of people with the "Get off my lawn" mentality. This is similar to the woman who sued the person who saved her life and said "What if I didnt want to be saved"....
it's not like they are going around doing up people's flys that are down, they are locking a door.

Someone broke into my car when it was unlocked. Rummaged around, through the papers in the glove compartment around and left. Fortunately the car was undamaged, but thanks for breaking the law police.

I've got nothing to hide, and always lock my doors, but still, just don't touch my stuff.
Really don't care though. Eliminates the easy car thefts and the subsequent police manpower is able to be used for something else. Some places have a bylaw saying you have to lock your door.
This is really not an issue though as far as I'm concerned. Seems like a waste of time for the police but their reasoning makes sense I guess.

No I don't think that and never said I do.
I said I have nothing to hide so I don't care. Your reasons for not wanting them to do it could be any number of things. I was just expressing my view on it, dont expect you to necessarily feel the same way.

What a wonderful use of public resources. Don't the police have real crimes to deal with? Oh yeah, they're too busy spending their shifts at the end of dead end roads playing on their phones.

What crappy neighborhoods do you guys live in that experiences this smashed car window epidemic?
I parked outside for eight years with my doors locked all the time and never had a problem.

Kensington, when I lived there we had windows smashed once for a pair of sunglasses and some change.
Also what crappy neighbourhood to you live in that you need to lock your car doors to stop your car from getting stolen.

In my area I lock my car doors to stop prowlings, to be honest I mostly ever hear of people in the downtown and surrounding area say they literally don't lock their doors because they know they're likely going to get a smashed window if they do.
Everyone keeps saying this is a common thing to do, but it's always you downtown people. Does anyone in the suburbs leave their doors unlocked, because smashed windows is common?
Forest Lawn maybe, but I personally don't know any suburbanites that don't lock their doors.
That was kind of a random shot to throw back at OutoftheCube, basically saying his neighbourhood must be so bad that thieves skip stealing things from vehicles and go right to stealing the vehicle itself. Especially considering OutoftheCube likely has never had a car stolen or he probably wouldn't have made that post, lol.
I don't have the stats but I'm pretty sure the beltline and other communities near downtown tend to have the highest vehicle theft numbers as well as break-ins.
"Our area is nice, thieves will only smash your windows or even politely steal your loose change if you extend them the courtesy of leaving the door open. They respect us too much to outright steal the vehicles, however. It's a downtown/latte-sipping mutual respect that you idiot yop-gobblers wouldn't understand."

I live in the burbs now and don't lock my car doors. Same philosophy applies. Don't rewarded thieves by leaving anything of value in the car. Leave it unlocked so that nothing is damaged.
My thought is that if you are willing to open a door and rummage around someone's car you are probably willing to smash a window to do it.
