But if you're making a ton of money already and merchandising and your logo is a significant part of that, it might not be necessary to alter that image in order to make 5% more.

There's a difference, and using someone who's likely making a salary as a comparable is irrelevant.

Hockey is not soccer. What soccer does is not, should not, and should never dictate what hockey should do.

heh it's the other way around too.

North American sports use fixed timing and video reviews which soccer refuses to do... and soccer is hurt because of it.

I don't think the NHL is looking at soccer. They might be looking more at european hockey. maybe they'll be a Skoda in the stands at the Dome.

Basketball is the better analog for influencing NHL's jersey sponsorship. The NBA just inked a 2 billion/year deal with ESPN and TBS in part based on the shared revenue from jersey ads.

But the one feature that escaped many observers until now was the fact that both ESPN and Turner will get to share in the sale of ads on game jerseys. According to Sports Business Journal, both networks lobbied to sell the ads, but the NBA refused to relent reserving those rights to the teams.

The NHL's holy grail has been a lucrative US contract which currently is peanuts compared to the other big 3 sports. The influence of tv/digital rights holders in demanding this stream of revenue considering the amount money the networks are committing may well make this as good as done.

In a thread of people discussing the cosmetics of a jersey, "it's cosmetic, get over it" isn't an opinion that has any validity in the conversation.

Initially I was in the "not 'till hell freezes over" camp. But the Adirondack jersey isn't bad and if it is not intrusive, it can be done. For instance, the Jack Daniels on the Nashville jersey blends in nicely.
