If they go the CFL route and have small ads, and sell retail versions without them, then I'll be okay with it. I just don't see them going that direction.

Codynw, I don't understand you concern with the advertising on the jersey.
Bearing in mind we don't know what the advertising will look like, what is it that upsets you so much?

The digital ads on the boards they are talking about is a technology that lets broadcasters replace the advertisements on the boards at the rink with their own advertisements.
Essentially people at the rink will see one set of advertisements, while the people watching on TV will see another set of digitally imposed advertisements.

I don't think it will look good no matter what they do. How don't you understand that people who collect jerseys are disappointed with this news?

Okay, I thought it was in regards to digital boards like those in Ottawa.

Do you really not understand? It seems like a really easy thing to understand.

For me, it is the cheapening of the brand coupled with the fact that we are already overrun with advertising. It would be nice if the one thing that could remain sacred is the jersey. After all, we expect the players to play for the logo on the front. So, who are they playing for then? Calgary, the Flames, or Scotiabank?
The saddest thing in the Saddledome right now is that narrow stairway from the club to the main concourse. Before the flood, there were images of the 89 team on the walls. After the flood? Obnoxious 20 foot tall Dodge ad.

I know it seems like no big deal but it sure cheapens the image of the leauge. They don't need to pimp every inch of the their brand image out to sponsors.
...the future of the NHL?

Agreed. Honestly, we're not talking massive dollars here, the cheapening of the brand will likely never be compensated for by advertising dollars.
Over the long-haul the owners would be losing money on this proposition, it only benefits the players.

They should just sell ad space on the helmets. The helmets are a prominent blank canvas for potential advertisers.

Digital ads on uniforms might be the compromise. Fans live see untouched jerseys. Fans watching TV at home see jerseys with tastefully placed ads...
...and audio will only be 2 minutes ahead of video.

I used to collect rugby jerseys. Part of the interest was the evolution of the jersey, and the changes in the jersey.

No nik, it isn't that is why I asked the question.

Thanks R14.
I agree with you on the second para, more so because of the loss of the history.
I don't think the advertising on the jersey would effect who the players are playing for, but that is my opinion. At the end of the day they are "independent contractors" that will move to the next contract is it is more money.

Wasn't there another thread on this just prior to the season??
Either way, welcome to the real world oh hockey fans of North America.
I think you can be safe in the knowledge that they won't go down the route of the teams we have in Europe, our teams really need the money to survive, where as this is just tapping the cash cow. You will get adverts but i wouldn't expect anything too drastic.

I always thought Doc Martins sponsoring West Ham was appropriate, being every holligans boot of choice.
Newcastle Brown Ales logo seems part of Newcastles shirt as well it looked so, well 'right'.

Collins quoted saying jersey ads "coming and happening." NHL spox tells TSN Collins was speaking in N American context, not specific to NHL

That's a cop out.
The motivation here is pretty transparent. Let the fans go through the five stages of grief, then introduce the ads.
