That would kneecap our rebuild.

I agree with you though; we're still not a contender and it's still likely that we fall back down to Earth at some point. Just a hypothetical.

Still it is a bad idea, lots of examples in recent years of teams that have strong regular season and maybe even playoff performance that become lottery teams in the following year(s).
And any stud top 3 defenceman that you get at the trade deadline for a late 1st round pick is likely past their prime and/or a pending UFA.

I find that Pronman is very OHL centric when talking about the CHL. He actually watches OHL hockey and gets reports from others when it comes to the W and the Q. He also seems to see a lot internationally, but hes not a "go to guy" for anything outside of Ontario when it comes to Canada.

I find him to be very much a pro-Swedish guy.

Say the consensus opinion shifts towards Pronman's statement that it's a 'good' draft and not this hyped-up 'Best Draft Ever'. Is there a point where Treliving should start listening to trade offers for our 1st round pick? What sort of player would need to be coming our way for people here to be ok with trading that much-coveted pick?
|
I like the idea and should we not have a pick in the top 12 or so, I would not be against it.
Look at the Oilers for example - I trade our first ( 12th and on ) for a Hall or Eberle. I know as flames fans we hate that entire squad but either one of those players on a Hartley team are whipped into shape real quick and have talent to boot.
The Oilers then lose one of their initial rebuild players but take 2 picks in the first round this year to go along with Nuge, Yak, Leon. It allows them to fix the poor rebuild and allows the flames to put a competitive team on the ice next year.
Look at this as a potential next years line up - still a very young team where the core will be together for many years yet, IMO, experienced and talented enough to be a playoff team.
Raymond - Monahan - Hudler
Gaudreau - Bennet - Hall
Colborne - Granlund - Byron
Ferland - Bouma - Jooris
Gio - Brodie
Wideman - Russell
Open -Open
Hiller & Ramo
Bollig as the healthy
Leaves a ton of youth and talent in Addy still including Sven.
Glencross, Stajan, Backlund Jones, Seto are extras which can be traded - I bet Stajan gets a late 2nd round pick - Glencross & Backlund an early 2nd round.
And for the grand finish - at the deadline, we trade a bottom 3 team their first round pick for our 2016 first rounder & 4 of this years 2nd rounders. Roll the dice and picking up one of the coveted 2 which would guarantee a couple stanley cups in the next few years

God I hope the Flames somehow win the lottery.
A forward core of McDavid, Bennett, Monahan, Gaudreau, Poirier, Granlund would be so good and that's with not even mentioning Baertschi, Klimchuk, Backlund, Jankowski, Ferland etc.
Bennett - McDavid - Poirier
Gaudreau - Monahan - Granlund

Leaving aside the impossible trade, you need good vets around your youth. Also, Backlund is a keeper IMO, ahead of Hudler. He's also not very old. You'd trade him for an unproven second rounder?

Can I just say, we are getting scarily close to the draft class that was born in the year Fire and Ice began as a Flames message board? Bingo, when was that?

Wow, Jeremy Roy is ranked 27th? Also surprised to see Werenski at 6th.

Sprong sounds like this year's Fabbri. He is getting ranked all over the place by different sources.

Sprong plays for a pretty weak team. As one of the Charlottetown Islanders owners is also the Q scout for the Flames, they'll have a good read on him. I think he's worth drafting and I like his 17 yr. old center too (Filip Chlapik). If Chlapik is available in the second round he'd be worth grabbing.

Hmmm, interesting. If the Charlottetown owner is also involved with Flames scouting, it will be interesting to see where Craig Button ranks him as he seems to rub shoulders with our scouts.

Names like Roy, Rantanen, Andersson, Svechnikov, Koroseltsev is where I am going to start focusing my attention on. I don't think the Flames see the top ten this draft.

We've played most of our games against eastern conference teams, and we kicked their butts most of last year as well, and 5 of our next 8 are also against the east. After that, only 20 of the last 60 are against the east, and that's when we'll be finding out really how good the Flames actually are.

The only guy from the Oilers worth even considering is Eberle. He is much more of a team guy, is underrated and is rotting right now in Deadmonton. Also has ties to Calgary in that his family moved here when he was 14 and played midget hockey here.

Hopefully the owner/scout can be unbiased when evaluating his own players.
