Hartley doesn't like Baertschi. Baertschi has a shorter leash then any of the other players or prospects. The kid has a confidence problem. Add calling him up so he can be benched to the list of poor development decisions made by the Flames on Baertschi.
He is our Kyle Turris. He will play quality hockey some day. But it's doubtful it will be for the Flames.
That said, it's tough to be too hard on Hartley given his success with other players. Sometimes a coach and a player just aren't compatible. I think this is one of those situations.

Baertschi is a sweetener. I think a veteran forward, Baertschi and another prospect should be enough grab one of Arizona's young blueliners. Time to use some of that prospect depth to our advantage.
On Baertschi's riding the pine, the kid will get what he deserves. He's supposed to make things happen in the offensive zone and be aware of his defensive coverage. He hasn't shown the ability to do either in his call up. I was hoping he would be flying out there and show a ton of enthusiasm, getting an opportunity like this, when so many said it was undeserved. He's stood out as not keeping up or paying attention to his assignments, which is just the opposite of what the team was hoping. Opportunity only knocks so many times. Baerstchi should get off the ####ter and answer the door, and damn quick. There too many youngsters in the Flames system that are looking like NHL caliber players.

JG was absolutely not on the PP at the beginning of the season - I remember people complaining about it.
And Setoguchi is on the PP to bang a bit in the corners and retrieve the puck. That's not Svens game. If Sven is out on the PP its at the half wall, which is Hudler or JGs spot.

How do you know that Hartely doesn't like Sven? He is not on a shorter leash than other prospects. Other prospects that are being called up are making the most of their opportunities. I'm not sure you can say that about Sven . Granted it's only been 2 games and maybe he puts it together in the next game.

Do you really think Sven deserved to be benched for half the game?

I'm all for giving the kids a chance and blah blah, but the Sven apologists on here are nearly unbearable. Are we watching the same player?

Jooris went down to 7 minutes a game, then earned his way back up. If Hartley doesn't like Sven you have to ask why. I'm pretty sure he didn't come in disliking him. So maybe Sven earned it.

I just don't see it. Baertschi has done absolutely nothing to deserve anything more than what he got. Gaudreau was treated the exact same way, had to sit a game because of his one shot in 5 games. He analyzed his game and realized how he can be effective. I'm not sold at all on Baertschi, he's done little to nothing to make me think he'll be an NHL player. That's nothing personal against the guy, but he hasn't shown he can be effective at any aspect of the game.

Ovechkin better have a hearing about his blatant head shot on Glencross. Head was the target and he should sit a couple. I doubt he will but he should!

It's not like they called Sven up to make him ride the pine.
The team was in a tie game and he wasnt playing good enough to deserve ice time.
Sven had a good training camp and got sent down because Gaudreau outplayed him, it happens.
He hadn't been great in Adirondack but he was had some flashes, was starting to play better but was snake bit.
Others that were in better form were called up first but when he got his chance he should have realized he needed to work his ass off and prove that he deserves to be in the NHL. The injury bug that hit the Flames was a gift to Sven and he has failed to to capitalize.
It's not on Hartley, it's not on management, no other prospects or young players have had any issues with Hartley or the coaching staff.
Sven needs to stop feeling sorry for himself, grind it out, and play the hockey he is capable of playing.
He isn't creating offense, he doesn't provide energy, and is still needs to be better defensively. At this point in time he doesn't deserve more ice time.
It is one thing to not put up points, but he doesn't even provide the energy you expect a young guy to provide when called up anymore.
It really disappoints me though since I am a fan of his and think he has the skill, but he really has squandered the opportunity given to him these past two games IMO.

The game was on the line and the Caps shortened their bench. Do you really think Sven can hang with Ovie and Backstrom?

Did the flames win? Did Jooris get more playing time? Johnny hockey also spent time on the bench near the start of the season. Hell he was in the pressbox for a game. All youngsters have a shorter leash than veterans. It's the way it's always been and probably always will be unless your the oilers.

I do feel sorry for Sven. While Baertschi hasn't been effective at all, for some reason I don't feel like the support and willingness to work with him from Hartley is there like it has been for the other young players on this team. During Gaudreau's first five games, Hartley spoke out in support of him and said things like would be given a long leach, is adjusting, has been a great student, etc - and I don't get that same enthusiasm from Hartley when he talks about Sven. I'm not he saying deserves more ice time, but there are ways outside of game time that you can use to help him - I wonder what feedback Sven has been getting from coaches to get better and if he has given extra time to work with in practice, because right now he seems lost.

That's simply not true at all...or is there something that i've missed? I do agree that he isn't making the most of his opportunities. He'll be sent back down and continue to learn how to be a pro. We all know he has a lot of potential and I still think he figures it out eventually...hopefully with the Flames!

He has to earn his icetime. Other young players (Granlund, Jooris, Gaudreau) are doing just that.

The kid was at the bottom in ice time the last two games and he was benched for half of this one. For what?
What I see is a player that was playing like an NHLer two season ago playing lost and looking like he has zero confidence. What I see is the Flames failing to out him into a position to be successful and win back some of his swagger.
If the Flames gave him a serious opportunity in this call up it would be on Baertschi. Instead the partner him with Setoguchi and limit his ice time when he makes the slightest mistake then complain that he isn't producing so he hasn't "earned" it.
They should have left him in the AHL whereby was finding success. I am not sure if they failed to get the coaches endorsement on this call up or what, but the management and coaches don't appear to be on the same page on this one.
