I think you're coming at this from a bias, DJones.

That article is barely English. Stream of consciousness wall of text.

What do you mean? I enjoyed Monahan being on the team last year but those numbers are pretty revealing. Fortunately Calgary is in the position that money is not a big problem. They are better off trying to keep fans interested as much as possible, which I think Monahan helped with.

How did my NHL 13 Be a GM get into journalism???

Seriously though, when I'm gaming, then I am asset managing. Keep from burning and ELC year for as long as possible while they improve and keep signing free agents to fill the NHL spaces. Then BAM, you have a high rated player at $900K/year.

However, the real world isn't as simple. I assume Monahan gained a ton of experience that may help his path towards being a long-term leader on this team.

Sidenote: The Nuge and Crosby are wicked comparables.

Money shouldn't determine whether a player makes the NHL or not.

Not a good way to run a team, imo.

Listen, David. You play a little harder, you'll get more ice time, maybe pop a goal or two.

Because Lambert is a Flames fan, thus Monahan will jump to his mind before others.

Also, because Lambert thrives on trolling, especially other Flames fans.

His argument seems to be that if the player gets enough points, it was a good idea, otherwise it was a bad decision. Pretty silly argument.

The only sensible reason to keep a player up is if you think it is the best thing for his development.

And I think there is more to that than just his hockey skills. You have to consider physical and mental development as well.

As a rule, my starting point is always send them down. And I argued that Monahan should go down.

But Monahan showed that he was physically and mentally mature enough, as well as having his game at a place where being in the NHL and watching NHLers helped him.

I think the decision to keep guys up is more often than not wrong, but Monahan is actually one of the few that I didn't have a problem with (after I saw his maturity and hockey smarts).

FYP, I question the "is a Flames fan" part based on the articles I've read

The author makes a good point--sometimes it is unwise to keep 18 and 19 yo in your lineup. But you just can't generalize this across the board. As others have said, there are other calculations involved, specific to individual circumstance. Where a rookie might best develop is the most important issue overlooked. The need for paying customers to have something to cheer for is also a consideration.

And, the author chose a terrible case study in Monahan.

I somehow doubt the author is a flames fan. If he was he obviously would know that Monahan clearly DID NOT play wing last year.

Just look at who is the author of the article is. I haven't seen one article where Lambert hasn't gone out of his way to blast the Flames for something.

Everyone else writes about how good this team is playing given the expectations and he rips management and management choices, rips individual players, and so on.

Lambert even writes that the Oilers were right to keep RNH in the NHL his first year and his and Monahan's production was most likely very similar when that 10 game marker came around. I'd hazard a guess RNH's shoulder would disagree this the OIlers decision to keep him in the NHL as well.

I was prepared to agree with the author that sending 18 and 19 year olds down to the CHL generally makes sense. But RNH as the example to keep them up? Monahan as the example to send them down? Hilarious.
Add in the "play well hurts your chances at the lottery" and the barely coherent narrative, this article is no good.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

just say no to Lambert drivel. I keep hearing the claim that he's a Flames fan, but no, there's just no way. I can't find the article right now but he recently wrote that he follows Calgary only because he has to contribute to Flames Nation.

no actual fan of a team, even if they are trying to avoid homerism, takes nonstop pot shots at a franchise, while writing entire articles trying to apologize for the Oilers terrible start and promising that they'll be much better. he's a dirty Greaser fan and that's all you need to know about his opinion pieces.

I can't read Flames Nation anymore. Not just Lambert but the writing is amateurish and overly cute for my liking

I opened the article only to realize it was written by Ryan Lambert who is the Sean Avery of hockey journalism. I feel bad now that I fell for the click bait and fed the irrelevant troll.

I can't remember if it was Conroy or maybe even Hartley himself but basically it was Bob who pleaded with Feaster to keep Monahan on the big club last year.

Also I think there would have been a good chance Bennett would have stuck or still might stick this year depending how things go
