All I play now is some shinny once a week. I know about 7 of the other guys really well, and the other guys are good fellas as well.

There is still chirping, but it usually revolves around coughing up a lung.

I used to think mom comments were ok until one time a guy on my team made a comment to the guy on the other team commented on how his mother was a dead lay.....turns out the guys mom had passed away about two weeks or so prior to that.......

Last time I chirped a guy, he promptly roasted me on the next shift....ever since then I keep my mouth shut.....

One once was chirping me about my wife, but I advised him that my wife does not go for guys with neon coloured laces, so he was welcome to come over, but he'd likely be sent home empty handed.....

Anything racial is out of bounds

Beer leaugue chirpers amuse me. Hockey is an emotional game and if you can get your opponent to lose their focus then you might get an advantage. That can be huge if your playing in a meaningful game with something on the line. So if your job is playing hockey or if you are hoping to make it your job it makes sense to get any legal afvantage you can. But for an average joe who plays once or twice a week in a beer league then whats the point? Good for you that you got under the skin of some of some dude on the other team.
Ive played a lot rec sports over the years and hockey is by far the worst for chirpers. I think that the equipment gives people some anonymity and a sense of increased strength, kind of how people become aggresive behind the wheel of their vehicles.

A while back at Bowness High School there was a kid who ended up dying as a result of a head injury sustained in practice. Terrible tragedy. It was a freak accident from what I can gather. Well, during a rec hockey game the Bowness Football Head Coach lined up for a faceoff. The guy he lined up against said "You're the guy who killed that kid." Accounts vary but the word is that guy who said it was positively rocked by one of the Coach's teammates. There was definitely a line and the chirper crossed it.

I played on a team full of "character" for a couple years. Once while playing in a game in a tournament at Seven Chiefs Arena against a native team a scrum ensued. My linemate shoved a guy and said, "expletive you, Hiawatha"

That was a long 2 hours.

Politically Incorrect here.

There are all these rules about "chirpin", saying you can't really offend anyone why bother chirpin?

If I'm gonna bother chirpin someone, they are sure as hell gonna be offended.

(all of that said I'm not a vary chirpy person)

I'll chirp at guys. Especially when they consistently falling into me . No race things tho.

One game a guy kept sliding into me ( ####ty skater). He ended up on a breakaway while cherry picking well, he fell again and slide into me ( for the fifth time). After I got a whistle I got up and asked him "Hey Tinker toes , you want me to call up my 8 year old nice to give you some skating lessons? I've seen toddlers fall less trying to skate." Even some of his teammates where chuckling.

Or a keyboard! Same effect, and I agree.

We had a grown man in tears last game. Actually a younger fellow, mid to late 20's but still. Good player but whined about everything, I mean everything. It was our last game in this div, moving up, so we didn't care to much about it so we weren't really trying to hard. We were up by a bit and this guy scored two goals to tie it up late, maybe 5 mins left. He skated right to our goalie's face a screamed something at him, goalie doesn't remember what he said. Of course it pissed us off. On the very next shift he took a 4 min major for a check from behind. One our guys skated up to him in the box and just said we're going to bury you and then skated by the other team and said thank 77 for what's about to happen. We ran roughshod over them and pumped in three goals during the penalty and made sure to stop by the penalty box for everyone. We scored two more in the last minute of play as well. 77 wouldn't come on the ice as we were knocking guys left right and center. He came out with like 10 seconds left and tried to hit me actually but he end up on his ass. We let him have it and some of his teammates too. At the end he was just screaming f you, shut up with tears streaming down his face. We were laughing uncontrollably which I'm sure made him feel better...

We chirped him all game, he deserved it. We were prepared to tie or lose as the game meant nothing but he went full......

Just a note on what somebody else mentioned about the bigger a holes on the ice being losers at home. We played a team for years that were just plain dirty. Slough foots, elbows, slashes to the back of the leg etc. One of the worst offenders was actually a really good hockey player but could never control his emotions on the ice and always wanted to fight but just the little guys. I can remember running into him at superstore or something and seeing his wife/girlfriend just belittling him. Calling him stupid and useless and he stood there like a little hurt puppy taking it. After seeing that his hockey behavior became so much more clear.

And yes, I did use it to chirp after he did his usual sticht out on the ice, just had enough. We had a good throw and I was able to put him down. Of course he was the type that wanted to go again in the bar upstairs.

Wow.

Lots of you guys remind me of the teams we occasionally play that ruin what would have been a fun night of recreational hockey.

The best chirp is a silent s***-eating grin. Ask Ville Neminen.

Race seems to be the line for most of the people here. I sort of lump that in with 'physical stuff that you have no control over' which should mean you shouldn't berate a guy for big ears, large nose, being short etc. Or is that considered different?

If you expect that you should probably get punched in the face for saying something, you probably shouldn't say it. Especially at the beer league, minor hockey level.

You can always tell who the biggest ###### on the ice is when guys are chirping about personal stuff in a rec league hockey game.
What about if you make up a second wife for the guy and then go to town on her.

"An polygamy is wrong Timmy."

"Hey Timmy, how's Meridith doin'?"
"What, who?"

"I have a date with Meridith while you're in your meetings tomorrow. Don't worry I'll keep a list of our sexual positions on the dresser."

"Meridith doesn't keep a clean bathroom."

"I see Meridith leaves the minivan for you to drive."

I'm the worst at chirpin'.

When I played last year pretty much everything except race was on the table. Keep in mind the teams were VERY white with the exception of the west-side Aces.

the kids I personally knew were the best to chirp. Say an actual name instead of "your sister" and some guys go ballistic.

The only thing that would cross the line is race and children.

Like I said, I don't think rec sports are the place for chirping. But back in the day, one of the best things to get people riled up was if you knew the names of girlfriends or sisters. If you had any way to find that out through mutual friends or friends of friends, that was gold for getting people off their game.
Man today if you wanted to Facebook creep your opponents in advance of a game, you could find great material quite easily.
