Why haven't the Flames offered Hartley a contract extension yet?

I don't buy the Babcock thing, but I have indeed forgotten the relationship between Burke and Babcock.

Not to take anything away from Babcock but look at the players he's had to work with. Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Kronwall, Holmstrom, Rafalski, etc. I think Hartley has done a better job relative to the roster quality. Hartley has been the perfect mix of sheltering/protecting the rookies while still providing excellent guidance. Accountability is key and no one gets a free ride. Both him and Gio are pretty much the best leadership you could ask for.

I agree... Gio is the kind of guy you keep on the roster until he retires, then move him to the coaching staff. He has garnered the respect of the team. He's got a long career ahead of him.

This has got to be a lot of fun for Hartley right now. Good crop of kids, a winning record, a passionate fan base, a leadership group behind you and expectations you set yourself up for.

I don't see why he would ever want to leave that at all. And I certainly don't think Treliving would look at the team on the ice right now and care more about having 'his guy'.

Hell, I'd rather watch our Flames group than what Babcock is putting on the ice (and I love Babcock).

Hartley will stick around as long as the Flames are regarded as a hard-working team.

At some point, Hartley's message will probably get old, and he'll need to be replaced. It happen to all hard-*** coaches. To be honest, I expected that to happen before the end of last season.

But that being said, holy **** is he delivering the goods right now!

And as long as that continues, he stays with the Flames, no matter what. It doesn't matter when he gets an extension, or if he is a free agent at the end of the season, or if he's getting other offers.

If he is still in control of the locker room, the Flames can afford to match or beat any offer, and it will be money well-spent.

It's a matter of chemistry, and right now Hartley is the freakin Heisenberg to the Flames' meth lab.

By all accounts Hartley has softened a bit, he's become a more well rounded coach, able to adapt better to different players.

He's like a fine red wine...a tad harsh when young but now that he's matured there's just a delicate hint of chocolate followed by a velvety hard skating finish. Definitely ready for consumption and pairs nice with red meat.

The one thing that most of the media personalities say about Hartley when his name comes up, is how much time he spends with players 1 on 1 in a teaching capacity. Apparently, most coaches don't do this. Hartley is very tough when he needs to be, but he communicates very well with his players and spends a lot of time actually teaching them, rather than just pacing them through drills.

I agree. I also don't think that even if he was a hard ass coach, that it is the breaking factor for a team. Scotty Bowman was a pretty tough coach to play for, but players still went all out for him because he was a good guy outside of work and the players saw that his way worked.

As long as the players feel that Hartley gives them a chance to win and has their best interests in mind, I don't see why the team would start turning a deaf ear any time soon.

Maybe it is just a waiting game, maybe he gets a big raise and longer contract if he pushes for the playoffs this year. The Flames are far from being eliminated in this young season.

It's all good right now, but I imagine he would want some security. Things can change in a hurry for a coach and they often become the sacrificial lamb. Hartley found himself out of the NHL once already, so I think he would value sticking with a team longer.

Warrener this morning said "why would Treliving offer him something now?" His point was that there's a whole year for Hartley to show off (or bust), there's no need to re-sign now, and the landscape for coaches may be different later. I'd add that other teams can't talk to him now.

I think more than anything, new management (Treliving and the other Brad) just got here a few months ago and they're still getting to know everything about the org. Right now everything is good, but its still early...... lots of time and really, no reason to rush. If things keep going well, I'm sure Hartley gets the ext.
