Was he always this bad? I don't remember too much occuring until he arrived in Edmonton.
Granted I didn't watch too many Boston games save for the odd few.
Ference with a cheap shot on Halpern - no penalty, no suspension:
Nov 3, 2014 Suspended 3 games for head shot on Kassian
May 2, 2013 Suspended 1 game for check to the head of Grabovski
Feb 2, 2012 Suspended 3 games for boarding McDonagh

I used to like him on the Flames, but 6 years in Boston, and being Captain of the Oilers, has made him a bit a punk. 3 games seems about right for suspensions we have seen this year.
Ference always played with a little bit of snark to him when he was here.
But he's become a real cheap shot artist since he got to Edmonton.
Maybe deep down he knows that suspensions are like vacations, a chance to get out of the suck.
Probably on the way to visit fam in Okotoks from YYC already, a single tear making its way down his cheek as he watches the calgary skyline shrink in his rear view.

the one thing that's pretty clear when you watch Ference is that he's just not that much of an NHL player anymore, he struggles to keep up with the play, makes bad decisions and has slow feet.
I get why the Oilers wanted him so badly. But on most teams he's probably a 7th defenseman at best.
This is addition through subtraction for the Oilers.

to be honest, those are all ways to describe ference when he was a flame also. In his last year, he was an obvious weak link, as i remember almost every team made it a strategy to dump it into his corner when playing the flames. He was a strong presence in the locker room for that group and moving him out had a larger/intangible impact on that team of course (probably something the oilers targeted him for). Giving him the C was a completely unpredicted, and let's just call it for what it was, a stupid (aka No Good) move.

That homer article about the Oilers fleecing the Flames in the Smid deal seems more and more absurd the more we talk about the state of their defense group.

Kassian is an absolute bum but that play was dirty.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. I hope Kassian enjoyed some karma coming his way. Having said that, I hate head shots and Ference is as dirty as they come now days... He's enjoying a nice vacation right now..
The money loss is chump change with what some of these guys are making. Need 10 games to start and go up from there. That will open some eyes.
I loved Ference as a Flame, but now that I don't have my homer glasses on, I'm starting to see just how dirty of a player he is.
I dont recall him playing like that in Calgary or Boston, I think hes just a fish out of water in Edmonton. He got big dollars and ergo big expectations that just are flat-out unrealistic.
Ference was never a top 4 defencemen let alone now at the end of his career and with basically zero help. Actually less than no help because Petry is really just playing out the string until Free Agency and the rest of their defence are throwaways, rejects and children. And then they throw a 'C' at him before hes ever even played a game.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Pretty sure it's still a thing in the CBA that if you don't have a disciplinary incident in an 18 month timeframe the player in question does not have their previous history taken into account.
Not sure why they mention the history in the video though.
That's only for the money the player forfeits while suspended (Article 18.15 of the CBA).
If it's a player's first offense (or first in 18 months), he forfeits one day's salary per game suspended. They calculate this by determining the number of actual days during the NHL regular season (usually around 185) and dividing the player's total salary (excluding bonuses) by that number.
For a repeat offender, he forfeits one game's salary per game suspended. This being his total salary divided by 82.
Any and all previous discipline can be taken into account when determining the suspension itself.

He always had a bit of it even when in Calgary.
I'll always remember his boarding penalty on St. Louis in the dying minutes of Game 7 that essentially snuffed out their chance of tying the game. That was a dirty hit as St. Louis was very vulnerable and he got up all bloody because of it. At the time of the hit, i was cheering loudly cause I hated that little puke St. Louis, but then when the penalty was called, I was thinking, "well that was stupid".
