I have said it since Roy was first hired - he will have success short term but players eventually drown out the noise.
Im sure the majority of us have had a coach at one point or another that has the "in your face" style as Roy. Eventually that same coach becomes repetitive and loses the locker room.
Keenan, Torts and Roy are all the same.

Makes me appreciate Hartley that much more - walks the fine line between being the boss and being one of the boys.

Yep, they allowed a ton of shots last year as well and Varlamov bailed them out time and again. They replaced Stastny and Parenteau with older guys (Iginla and Briere), didn't improve their D and here they are.

I honestly think they overachieved last season and were due for a big drop-off. They still have a great future and Roy is going nowhere.

Tough call - he is a major face of that teams original image so canning him doesnt seem too likely.
I don't think they overachieved. If you go up and down their roster, it is pretty stacked and should be better this year.

He is the consistent garbage can kicking type of coach. These coaches never last long. The silent (to the public eye) coaches are often the ones who last a long time.

I think someone once mentioned something about how few (i.e. no) teams have ever followed up a new coach (usually a candidate or winning Jack Adams)+ big point jump in the standings with a 2 year matching or exceeding the previous years points. That, and a non-contender (Minnisota, though I think they have a lot of upside - more then CO) knocked out the Avs in round 1.

The hardest thing will be they go from the hunters to the hunted....pretenders to contenders... etc... making that jump is really hard to do, especially for a "tanking" team. There are a lot of talented teams that historically have never been able to make that jump.

Watching the games is and I have watched the Avs and he's been fine defensively. But I guess you can always read too much into a comment and make up your mind. It is also a coincidence that the best players in the game usually have the best +/-.

The only reason anyone is surprised by this is because nobody in Calgary - coaches, GMs, media, anyone - could publicly say a bad word about Iginla for his last 8 years here. You had to read between the lines (the answers are in the room) to perceive any criticism of is play.

I'm just glad the Flames have a culture now where nobody is above criticism.

I suspect Iginla's buddy Sakic had a big say in it. One thing about the former superstar players is once they get into management they seem to have a soft spot for aging stars and the old-boys' club. Just look at the Olympic teams Gretzky put together.

True enough. I do recall Brian Sutter calling him out early in his career, but once Iginla became the team, he was bigger than any coach and that was huge problem. It appears his career has come full circle.

I think Roy is smarter than some may give him credit. He's going to have some moments but he should know better being a former pro that being a tyrant won't make for a long coaching career. That said he has that abrasive and combustive personality that does wear thin over time. Reminds me of Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco where we are seeing after continual improvement from bad team to Superbowl Contender he's wearing out his welcome with players and management. That said Sakic I'm sure will be solidly in his corner and things will have to go very bad for him or ownership to fire Roy.

Iggy should punch Roy out and take over coaching duties while still playing RW

The Avs fans I've talked to have said that Iginla is playing well and they are happy to have him.

I don't think one "bad" play is worthy of overreaction.

Darryl Sutter called him out a couple times IIRC. Darryl was pretty good an calculated at calling out players, I remember Iginla and Gelinas at one point during the 2003-2004 regular season.

Iggy has never been really strong in his own end...not sure why that would change now

its a little different when you are scoring 40-50 goals

Wouldn't surprise me if they tanked it for another generational talent.

It was Iginla and Conroy in Montreal, I think Conory said he came up to them and asked them if they brought their dresses.

Darryl also blasted the team after the game 1 loss in Vancouver and we never looked back.

I remember the thread when Iggy signed for the Avs and I mentioned that the Avs wouldnt even get a sniff at the cup for the next few years while some seemed to believe they were favourites.

Forget the cup, they may not even make the playoffs.

They're only two points ahead of the Oilers.

Same here, there are just way too many good teams in the West. I think Dallas and Minnisota are a lot closer towards moving towards the contender range. Maybe even Nashville too, I always believe more in a strong blueline then flashy talent. In 2 years? Honestly, I think the Flames actually have the most potential in the west.

I somewhat agree. I think the Flames are well positioned, we're likely looking at playoffs in a couple of years and then maybe real cup contention after that which hopefully sees Chicago/LA/Anaheim on a bit of a downswing.

Right now the Avs are a vastly more talented but only marginally more organized version of the Oilers.

He put in no effort. Coasted. And was still entitled to his 20 Min a game and 1st PowerPlay Unit.

A bit ot, but O'Reilly is currently last on his team, and 2nd last in the league for +/- at -10

I know this stat is not hugely meaningful, but it appears something is going wrong there.
