Default attn techies....need help with laptop purchase

I'm looking at picking up a laptop to use for those long night shifts at work, need wireless capabilities, big hard drive, ability to play games, surf net, watch movies etc......I stumbled on to this refurbed gateway (last years model) specs seem not bad, except for the 4500 rpm HDD.....does anyone have any opinions??

Thanks

I have this model as my personal comp, had very few problems that I didnt cause myself. Its able to do everything my old desktop did. The one thing I have noticed about it, and from what I've read about all Gateways is the hidges suck, so you might run into problems with it that way. Other than that the only problem I have with it is the speakers kinda suck but hey its a laptop so what do you expect. If you have any questions shoot.

I just bought a Dell XPS M1210 on Saturday, which is frankly a lot more than you're looking at both in features and price ($2250).

But this seems like a decent option...get XP pro though, at minimum. One of my work laptops was using XP home and the memory management was absolute crap.

I have a mac that I love, and based on your requirements, I will not recommend it to you.

Only thing I can suggest if you dont go with that computer is to avoid Toshiba like the plague. The only thing you will ever get out of their paperweights is involved in class-action lawsuits.

Just got a MacBook and its the best computer I've ever used, Mac or PeeCee. The screen is amazing, way better than my iMac in fact and the new keyboard is slick.

Take a look at them. If you go with a Windows laptop, get the Core Duo proc. I would have never thought my low end Apple notebook would be faster than my year old desktop. These chips scream. Just dont use it on your lap. Burn your nads off!!

WOW. 802.11g/Bluetooth/Firewire/Good video card/Core Duo/Gigabit ethernet/2GB, 120GB Thats amazing for under $1,600

The MacBook's screen is acually really big feeling. It's 13 inch but its 16 X 10 aspect ratio so you really have the same real estate as a 15 inch 4 X 3.

If you need Windows a la games, and dont hate it with a passion like moi, go for the memory express one.

Keep in mind though, the Acer is not a standard 4X3, it is a wide screen 15.4" screen.

Don't forget that you can run Windows on the new macs as well. I would recomend the macbook. I'm running a MBP right now and would highly recomend them.

Watch out for Acers though, when something goes wrong and you can't fix it yourself and neither can the techs at Mem Ex... they send it all the way back to Taiwan and u wait like a whole whopping 1 - 2 months for it to come back... My only word of warning.

Default Toshiba's suck

First time poster... I wanted to be sure you stayed away from To****ba's. This laptop has hassle after hassle. I've taken the stupid thing apart about about 3 times already. We use HP's at work, seem pretty solid.
