Recently there has been a string of hits that the refs did not even issue a penalty. Those clearly suspendable hits resulted in the NHL head office rightfully handing down player suspensions.
It is about time these refs receive game suspensions as well.
JMO NHL refs are not held accountable where they should be.
Hopefully Ferland recovers quickly. Concussions are a nasty injury to deal with.

Meh, he now sits out 4 games that will probably hurt us in the standings. Don't see how that helps us.

He sits out against the Canucks, Jets, Stars and Blues. All Western conference teams.

Punishment does need to be doled out but I wish they could somehow make him miss the next 4 games against Calgary.

I think lot of the time its a lot to do with the Union interfering. I would suggest he requested the extra day to talk to who ever he need to talk to about the hearing. His agent, his union etc.

Unions are No Good . They are just special interest groups, there what destroyed Detroit.

perfect decision IMO. 2 games for the hit, 1 extra game for being a repeat offender, 1 extra game for Ferland being concussed.

No kidding. IMO if not for the history I don't even think it was suspension worthy. Unlucky for sure but it looked like volchenkov was just trying to be big so he didn't miss Ferland and because Ferland was low he accidently caught him with the forearm.

Accidental or not, it was a clear head shot and exactly the type of hit the league is trying to eliminate. I think the NHL got it right on this occasion.

Grapes has been talking about the danger of using hard plastic pads since the very first Rock'em Sock'em video. The poor design of padding has been a decades-old problem.

But IMO intent is what separates something from a being a in game penalty/fineable offense and something that is suspension worthy.

I can't remember but is this the first time a player has been suspended for an incident against the Flames?

4 games seems right for a repeat offender.

I honestly didn't find it to be a vicious hit to the head, like Ference on Kassian last night, for example.

Ference deserves 5 games for that hit, but since Kassian doesn't seem to be injured, I'm going to guess he gets 3.

Volchenkov has been suspended twice previously for elbowing. Volchenkov gets 4 games this time, which is exactly what he got for the Marchand elbowing.

Now THAT'S sending a message that repeated conduct like this just won't be tolerated.

Ya, special interest groups looking out for the employee. Unions take a lot of slack because of a few cases of corruption, but let me assure you, in most industries that have one there is a very good reason; to prevent abuse from ownership.

I can live with him having to take an extra day to consult with a union rep because I know there were a lot of guys who spent time being abused and taken for granted by owners and getting paid peanuts.

Unions are a great tool, the issue isn't with unions, it's with bad unions.

I don't think its enough. This is his 3rd suspension for elbowing. He got 4 last time for elbowing Marchand (who also ended up with a concussion).

He apparently didn't learn his lesson from the Marchand suspension so 4 games obviously isn't enough.

I've been part of many unions. Just don't like them. Even a few really good ones. The problem is they protect everyone , not just the good ones. Everyone has worked with someone at one point or another and thought " How they hell does this person still working here, let alone get hired?." Unfortunately Unions have to treat every worked as If the are equals even the ne'er-do-wells.

Example in the NHL would be Burrows.

Edit: The teacher union here in BC caused a huge disruption at the end of the school year. While their special interest group was trying to get what the wanted they put a burden on the rest of the population in BC. People had to stay home with their kids or find other means of care. If they cared about the kids like they kept saying they would have worked while they hammered out a deal.
