I just want to point out how impressive the Flames depth is now compared to years past. We have 4 of our starting forwards on IR now, yet all of the callups haven't looked out of place one bit. If the Flames got hit this hard with injuries in past years I would have been ready to write the season off, but now I'm looking forward to seeing what the callups can do
This also really reinforces how much we DON'T need guys like McGrattan or Setoguchi. I really hope next year Treleving realizes that he doesn't need to sign any plugs or reclamation projects and sticks with guys already in the system

Sven was the right call up.
His NHL experience is also a factor since with all the youth up you want a guy who has been there before and he was also next on the list based on his pre-season performance.
Also I'm not sure being critical of a player and looking at the potential of moving him from a position of strength to shore up a position of weakness is writing a player off.
I think all of the fan base want Sven to succeed on the NHL, there are just some posters that understand he needs to earn it and that he has areas of the game he needs to work on, while others that think he can do no wrong and should have already played two full seasons in the NHL. That is where this discussion happens.

I am not arguing with you, but next year is going to be even more of a challenge to hit the floor than this year was.
They will have no choice but to sign a couple FAs.

Backlund's salary should at least double next year. That will replace a Setoguchi and McGrattan type on it's own. Brodie's salary is also more than doubling next year. Plus Lance Bouma is likely due a raise.

I agree. No doubt we have more prospects than before, but there's only about four more forwards that I'd feel comfortable throwing onto the big team right now. And that would be for a few games only. Potter (because of experience) and Wotherspoon on defence if we needed them but after that pretty slim picking. The talent level drops off substantially after those six IMHO.

Brodie is getting a 2.5m raise next year, that's already far more than both McGrattan and Setoguchi combined. Plus Glencross is going to UFA with Backlund, Bouma, Byron, Ferland, and Jooris hitting RFA. All of the RFA's are likely to be resigned with decent raises involved I would think, and if Glencross stays there's likely at least a small raise involved. The cap floor shouldn't be a problem
If Glencross moves on, then I'm not against signing a free agent, but try to get someone that can actually play hockey and not just waste space on the roster

Yes Backlund and Brodie are getting raises. But they aren't huge.
You guys are ignoring the fact that the highest paid players are Wideman on D and Jones up front.
Either guys like Wideman, Jones, Glencross and Hudler are all back, or they are replaced by other high priced vets.
The point was that the team can't simply go all youth - there won't be a whole mot more roster spots next year than there were this year.

Kidding, I hope he does great.

I am not sure if short sighted is the right term here. Perhaps impulsive or hasty but yes I agree - which is why I said the Flames are probably waiting on him. They also haven't had a chance to see him at training camp so they'll want more time to view him.

If we have trouble reaching the floor, we can just sign a goon for to a 1-year $7M contract and have him sit in the press box for 70 games.
The floor is really never a concern.

Suggesting that an asset could get the team something in return that might be helpful to move forward is throwing him under the bus? Because those were really the only trade him comments I ever read, people wondering if he could generate something helpful or maybe he'd flourish with a change.
Of course there would be the handful of people who gave up on him, but that will happen in any situation, and far from the embarrassing epidemic you claim. If you feel it reached embarrassing heights, then the only way that could happen is my initial post was accurate.

Meh, we kind of did that anyways signing Engelland. Fully expect him to be the 7th man by next year, people complain about the money given to him but we needed to overpay someone.

I've always been a big Sven supporter so I hope he takes this chance and makes the most of it.

Agreed, it's awesome.
Just keep our fingers crossed that our D stay healthy because we do not have good depth there.
Would be a disaster.
