I believe I read earlier that Hartley said his status would be updated tomorrow. My guess is we see Jooris play tomorrow.

Because his hands move off of his chest an inch or two, no more. This isn't a guy flailing out with his arms. Regardless of whether his hands are inching forward or right against his chest, they're going to hit Ferland's head because Ferland is much lower than Volchenkov.

Suspensions are just crappy compensation to the injured team.
Suspensions should be team specific. Volchenko should miss the next 1-3 games he plays against the Flames.
If he were suspended immediately it just helps out Vancouver a rival in the Flames division.

Initial contact with head+repeat offender+meeting with league =suspension. Seems pretty clear he will get a game or three. If intent entered the equation, it would be more like 5.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Looked at it again. If he meant to shoulder check he would have pivoted to his left. He didn't - he turned head on to bring his left arm through. Then he extended his arm and followed through. If he didn't mean to hit the head, he sure did exactly the wrong thing to avoid it. Most players would turn the other way, because then their shoulder takes the blow, and because that's the way the puck was going and he'd be in position to skate forward after it. Again, once he made contact, he drove through with his elbow. Intentionally dirty hit. By a guy who'd been embarrassed earlier in the game.

It's about punishing the player, not punishing a team or compensating the team with the injured player.

I don't always agree with the new head contact rules likes when a player hits an opponent who has his head down and the shoulder makes some contact with the head. However elbows/forearms to the head have always been a dirty play , well before the recent head shot rules came into place it's called elbowing and would/should have been called in any era.

Ferland has a concussion
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
Per #Flames GM Brad Treliving, LW Michael Ferland did suffer a concussion against Predators. He is not travelling with team.

Somehow this hit is made worse by the fact that it was the kid's first NHL game. Hope they through the book at him.

From what I understand, today's hockey elbow pads are a lot more dangerous than those used in past years. In past years you just had some extra padding around your elbows. Now, I understand, there's a plastic cap. Its more like armour than padding.

Yeah, it seems like it's more of a weapon than a protector. It's a problem that's been brought up for a number of years now and it's never been addressed.

And they skate faster and the players weigh more. All of those mean more injuries

There was a great article about Ferland in the Herald yesterday. The kid and his mom have worked so hard to get him here. They never had a lot of money so his sister couldn't play sports so he could play hockey. Didn't play rep hockey until 15 and people kicked in for his WHL sign up fees and costs for equipment over the years.
