Good. Should always be the hitters responsibility to avoid direct shots to the head if at all possible.

Thank god. After all the hits to the head Stajan has taken in the last few years with nothing ever coming from it I was starting to develop a complex. That hit last night was just stupidly dirty and unnecessary.

I understand the refs can't catch or call everything in a game but this is the kind of hit that needs to get called in the game. I thought the Gudas hit on Upshall was suspendable too.

Honestly, I'm thinking a fine or a single game at most. Nothing malicious about that - as opposed to Burrows - more unfortunate than anything.

Leading with your elbow is dirty enough. I agree about intent though

Not if you have no intention of hitting the head area though...and I really don't believe AV was intending anything like that. Just didn't see Ferland coming down to that level and whammo...it was too late.

That being said, they seemingly want any and all head contact punished regardless of why it happens, so I suspect a one game suspension.

Are you guys watching the same replay that I am?

He hits him first and then swings around with the forearm shiver directly to the side of the head.

It's two separate plays, watch:

He comes in for the stick check and as he misses it he follows through with the elbow, tucking it, bracing the arm, swinging his torso and then extending and following through.

It is super dirty and a flagrant hit to the head.

Only if you believe he meant to target the head...which you obviously do.

I don't, I think he meant to hit him in the shoulder and knock his ass backwards...but Ferland was lower than AV expected. What reason would he have had to target a 3rd line kid he has never even heard of before?

As do I.

He was still pissed off about being beaten like a rented mule by Johnny. Or was that before the move by Johnny?

Regardless, it looked like an intentional head shot to me.

I see that. First off, a stick check is usually followed by a hit to finish the play, so I'm not sure "two plays" is relevant to anything. The reason he hours him in the head is Ferland is crouched down with his head below Volchenkov's shoulder. The intent was to finish a check.

It is Volchenkov's responsibility to avoid head contact, if that there is no doubt. There's no intent though

I don't get this logic. Erik Haula is a 3rd liner as well and was a victim of a blatant head shot just a few days ago.

Volchenkov should get 2-3 games IMO.

Because that's how Volchenkov has always played?

Repeat offender, head principal point of contact, 3-5 games.

AV swung his left arm right to the back of Ferland's head. He didn't have to swing his arm. He could've hit Ferland in a much cleaner way.

Totally agree. This wasn't accidental contact to the head, he pushed his elbow/forearm through Ferland's head.

Intent is impossible to determine. The action speaks for itself, and he is a repeat offender.

Dirty. This is not a swing of the arm to protect himself from the collision. If you use the yellow stripe on his pants as a point of reference, you can see that he sits down his hips and begins the pivot from there (right when his left skate leaves the frame)... then torso and arm follows through. This is a leveraged shot.
