So, it's true. What a horrible news.

Yikes... I lived at HUB for a semester. Exams can be scary, but shouldn't be bad enough that you want to end your life because of it.

I think this is the story from 2010: http://www.macleans.ca/education/uni...ical-released/
I believe it's a fairly common suicide method in Japan, but can't remember exactly.

Ya, that's back when I was a student there, I was gonna say I'm pretty sure this exact thing happened back then. When I heard it was a bunch of chemicals, I just assumed it must've occurred in the CEB building. Never realized it was actually in HUB mall. Such a busy area, scary.

At the UofS they implemented reading week in February because so many depressed students were killing themselves and it was called suicide week. Depression is a sonofabitch.

I didn't take school particularly seriously, so in my version of the "exam dream" I'm not really concerned about failing the class, but I'm frantic about actually finding the room. And then being embarrassed by the Professor because I skipped the entire semester.

And this is now standard as far as I know. RDC and U of C both have their reading weeks early-mid February.

Ever heard of depression? mental illness? A lot can be wrong in someone's life to want to end their life this way.

I honestly didn't realize the final exam nightmare was so common. Mine always involve a misread schedule and frantically trying to find the room on exam day. What's odd is I don't recall university being too much more stressful than any other time of my life, yet it's the only period where I have consistent nightmares from.
Sorry to hear somebody lost their life. Thankfully nobody else was harmed.

When I was in uni a couple years ago, I always thought that exams were useless. They have no bearing on the real world. In the real world you have resources to access when you need information.
Group or individual projects with deadlines, on the other hand, are a much more 'real world' way to test someone. Those happen pretty much everyday of anybody's career.
I want to experience this dream because I've never had it.

Ya this is news to me. I regularly have nightmares involving returning to school following reading week to realize my 5000 word history paper, which I have done nothing on, is due in two days. Or showing up to class and realizing I skipped a bunch of lectures and failed to hand in an assignment.

1. Really? A kid commits suicide and some of you think that this is the place for "Edmonton is no good" comments? Really?
2. Thank-you for that link troutman... it never occurred to me that other people had "the dream"

Another common dream is losing your teeth. I have those too.

Wow, I had no idea other people have that dream!
I have it at least once a quarter. In certain variations I forget to wear pants to the exam room.

Thanks to this thread I had a dream last night I had become a prof at my old university. And hours before my first class I still hadn't done a lick of preparation. No syllabus. Nothing.
Only fitting though I would teach university in the manner I studied it.

Your usual aggravating and senseless posting... Perhaps, except for a debilitating terminal illness, name one reason for a university kid to end his/her life that you can justify as valid.

To be fair you did ask "My God, what could be so terrible in kid's life to want to end his/her life this way?..." You didn't ask if it was justified as valid.

Yeah same here...... had another one, this time just had a dream I was stuck studying for 4 exams in 2 days.... what a boring freaking dream. 4th dream I've had about university exams this month, probably 20th this year, and I'm over half a decade past my last university class.
Exams are a very stressful time for some people..... for us, its a dream plague, for others its suicide. I know more than a few people (indirectly) that committed suicide during midterms week. (oddly enough, usually not during finals though)
