-Wrong side of Deerfoot. Far away from the majority of season ticket holders (NW, SW)
-Too far from downtown. Not inner city at all. No real residential around, just industrial.

Ken King has been promising a "downtown arena" for as long as I can remember, Firepark is totally disconnected from downtown.

Answer - 99.9% not likely as the rumored project is too large.
Good Riddance, I'm very much behind a new look building in the same vein of the CMHR.

How do you feel about the new NMC building? Probably got half your bags packed already?

You must be a realtor if Firepark is your idea of "close to downtown".

I imagine Firepark was never in the conversation, and was used as negotiating leverage with the other areas.

West Downtown, and East Village, IMO, have always been the most legitimate location options.

That site is way to small, the building is becoming an art gallery and it's in the historic buildings inventory. I would say 1000% not likely.

Sure. Lots of things are close to deerfoot, doesn't mean it makes sense. That location would have a set of lights onto Barlow, and then a ramp onto memorial, then onto deerfoot. All the traffic has to exit to the east, or through and business park to the north. It was not built for that density, and provides no long term benefit to anyone funding an arena. There needs to be commercial and residential zoning for this development to work, and at best you would have the former. Non-game days, it would be a dead zone. Not even close to a big enough footprint either. Ya you might squeeze the facilities, but no parking.

The west village allows traffic dispersion in all directions, a heavier population base within a 10 minute drive, better public transit access, and the best part, it fits with the plan for the area, as opposed to "bare land, build it there". There is going to be a heavy private investment component to this clearly, so you need development infrastructure to make an ROI.

I just wana add the location should not be close to the zoo, let the animals rest after parading them around all day.

I was thinking more of a zoo/arena hybrid. You could could different exhibits for different teams, I mean com'mon penguins, coyotes, panthers.... Cage up a couple senators and I think we have something!

I live in the NW. and I have honestly always thought Fire Park would be the best option for me, my #1 priority would be accessibility.

As someone who commutes to the games, and is not that interested in the bar scene around the rink before/after the game. Its a location 90% of Calgarians could get to in 25 minutes or less even during rush hour, and the max bell station is just as close to Fire Park as the Sunalta station is to Greyhound.

But I understand that foot traffic and the entertainment district have been made priorities for this project. And Fire Park is a long way from being that. So I am resigned to the arena being put in an area of town I avoid as a commuter.

Memorial and Deerfoot are great, but everybody needing to get from Memorial or Deerfoot onto Barlow isn't what I'd call accessible (based on my Google Maps view of the site, I haven't actually driven up by there in years so people can correct me if I'm wrong).

The traffic for Firepark would be horrible. Traffic travelling towards downtown trying to turn on to southbound Deerfoot hour is a going show. It would be brutal how that would back up after a game lets out.

There was the start of an underpass built to go directly firepark rather then using Barlow. I highly doubt fire park, but my assumption would be they'd unblock and finish that instead of using Barlow.

One rumor has it some Flames management are snapping up properties in Sunalta. Don't know how legit they are, but if I was a betting man, I'd say it's going in the West Village. Public transit and the central location is damn near ideal for that area.

And why the eff would they put it in Fire Park? There is no surrounding community that Flames fan are going to want, i.e. downtown bars and clubs that people head to afterwards. Even with the Franklin/Barlow stations, there's still a considerable walk just to get to a stadium, likely not indoors.

And isn't the land around that Firestone oil tower contaminated?

So is the West Village location.

I wonder who will be paying for the reclamation.

I'm sure that it will all be part of the negotiation with the city and province. There would be resistance to any level of government paying money directly into a new arena in this city (and I tend to agree), but not so much for indirect costs like reclamation, land acquisitions and transfers, major infrastructure upgrades, etc.

"We'd have to do X and Y eventually anyway, regardless of the arena."

Also, regarding the Field House question - a field house is intended to be a practice/development facility, that can house many different types of sports and activities.

Definitely not the same as a stadium.
