Without knowing the whole story, I think I would give cbc's hr department benefit of the doubt here. It would be pretty stupid to open themselves up to a lawsuit by dismissing someone based on their private bedroom activities. They must have conducted a thorough investigation which led them to believe their employee committed acts of non consensual sexual violence.

They could have waited until a police investigation was conducted, but as long as they can provide evidence that they conducted a reasonably thorough investigation, and determined that his actions violated his contract, then they are fine. The hr department would have a duty to the company to terminate any employee who would damage cbc's reputation and therefore cause undue hardship to the company.

If they didn't have a strong case that their investigation was thorough, then they should have suspended him with pay until a police investigation was complete. I guess we shall see...

Yeah it would seem there is more to come and that the CBC knows with great confidence that the fallout is just starting, time to distance themselves, they probably will get smeared if they've been aware of this problem for a while, which is likely.

I used to listen to his show all the time on the radio. He is a pretty good talk show host, but there is just something about his tone that bugs me sometimes.

I don't know why, but I thought he was gay. I could have sworn that he came out a few years ago. I must have been thinking of someone else.

Although I agree that what happens between 2 consenting adults is nobody elses business (wheteher that is what happened in this case or not remains to be seen), statements like this are the reason why the word "bigot" means almost nothing today. Total throw away word with 0 impact or meaning.

The Toronto Star has a freelance piece on the allegations against Jian that the reporter was working on for quite a while now. Seems like this was brewing for a while now.

What I'm curious about is how the supposed jilted ex-gf recanted her allegations or retracted what she was claiming (as according to Jian's FB post?)

Quite the scandal the CBC has got themselves! I was a big fan of Jian's and listened to Q every day. Not sure what to believe.

On one hand, I find it hard to totally believe the account of an anonymous source that didn't press charges. Although when it's multiple people? Get's a little harder to believe ole Jian then.

The co-worker thing is absolutely fireable. However if there actually was a complaint, why wasn't it done then? Why wait until the CBC knew this story was coming out? Looks more like they are covering their ass.

If they didn't fire him over the co-worker comments, its likely because he was so popular they let it slide, probably by talking to him and pressuring the girl to keep quiet.

Ugh, I certainly hope that's not what happened.

As I don't know who this Ghomeshi person even is, I find this thread to be highly entertaining.

Also, let's be real, no woman in their mid-20's who's career is being fast-tracked by working with a top CBC personality would complain about anything. The fact that a complaint was even made suggests that it must have been extremely over the top.

We had a situation many years ago between a male and female employee where the two were very flirtatious and sexually suggestive. This went on for sometime but at some point he, according to her crossed the line. We (management) looked into it for months and there was very little we could. No witnesses to the actual event but many many witnesses to flirtatious ways. Very hard to prove he did anything wrong even though everyone of us believed the woman. We were advised to not let him go as it would open us up to a lawsuit. Eventually she quit and life went on.

My point I guess, is to say the CBC has likely known about this for awhile and has been doing their due diligence, at least I hope so. There are many scenarios where he would keep his job short term/long term and of course where they would release him from active duty with or with out pay. Simple statements and Facebook post are not much to go on.

On the cool sorry bro side I ended up at a house party in Brampton I think and Moxy Fruvous was there. This was a long time ago.

Seriously?

For your follow-up post, are you going to say that she was "asking for it" and that she shouldn't have worn that dress if she didn't want Mr. Ghomeshi to say he wanted to "hate f*** her"?

I think the point he is actually making is how external and work pressures actually make it very hard for women to complain even when they have every right to do so. That's part of the broader problem.
I certainly have known women who have been victims of sexual harassment at work and have chosen not to file a complaint because they don't want it to impact their career. It is a sad reality of the modern work environment.

Unless I read that wrong, he's saying the fact this young woman complained speaks to how serious it must have been, because typically a man of authority and stature within the CBC means most women would have been hesitant to say anything for fear of harming their career. Its a sad fact in our world, where women are taken advantage of by men in power. (Yes I know this happens in the reverse too..)

I believe it's been stated that a formal complaint was not made.

From the Star:

Quote:
The woman said she complained about Ghomeshi’s behaviour to her union representative, who took the complaint to a Q producer. As the woman recalls, the producer asked her “what she could do to make this a less toxic workplace” for herself. No further action was taken by the CBC, and the woman left the broadcaster shortly thereafter.
Maybe not a formal complaint per any CBA, but she did complain.

personally, i wish their was a harrasment program that i could opt into at work. i'd like to be told occasionally that some wanted to hate on me!!!!!

anayways, i skimmed the TorStar article and it will be interesting to watch this play out......i'd like to think that given his tastes and his profile that jian would have tread very carefully; however, he is not the first high profile person to have his laundry aired in public.

i will hand it to him for getting out in front of this very quickly..........

Anyone who says BDSM is about rape or is a slippery slope to rape is simply ignorant.
It's not about BDSM anymore since the allegations have been released. The BDSM talk stems from when we only had Ghomeshi's statement saying he was partaking in a BDSM lifestyle and was called a scumbag just because of that choice.

However, we are not saying what was described in the allegations (punching and choking without asking) is ok as it's BDSM. That's assault if true.

This thread really has two topics going at the same time.

If what occurred in his bedroom was consensual then it should have no bearing on his job. If it wasn't consensual then it is a big issue.

At the end of the day I am going to wait till all the facts come out (if that ever happens) till I make a decision/comment on the individuals involved.
