Some High River residents are upset about losing their view because of a three-metre high flood-mitigation berm.

Snodgrass has brought the issue up at council and drafted a letter in response to the complaining residents. But he said it’s hard to see their point of view.


"I'll show you what a loss of home value is — cut a notch in that thing for your view, your home value is nada,” he said.

Snodgrass is not well liked by High River residents. He has zero emapthy for any issues residents bring up and always replies with "This is the way it is and when it's done you'll like it!" Then there's ripped up downtown and his pie in the sky plans to turn it into a mini version of a Kensington area of Calgary. Good luck finidng businesses to fill those empty buildings when you've eliminated most of the parking.

I'm good friends with a former member of town council and as she stated to me the other day that they didn't have to build those berms so close to the houses. Any snow melt from those berms will flow into peoples basements. Then there's the issue of who will do the upkeep (grass cutting) and maintinence of the berms.

'berta. What idiots! I wonder what their proposed solution would have been and how much that would have cost the taxpayers vs. what they perceive they lost in home value (and like the article quote notes, with no tax-payer action how much their home value would be).

The houses are not on a flood plain or they would have been bought out by the govt.

4) No communication with residents about what you plan to do.
5) Ignore or dismiss and concerns they might have.

I don't know much about the area or these berms but are these behind the homes off 3rd Street or Riverside Green? If so, there appears to be about 20m or less space between the property lines and the river bank. That isn't very much space to pick and choose a berm location.

The berms could have been built a further 30 feet away from the houses. That would have greatly reduced snow run off from flowing into their basements. There's also the issue of berm maintinence so it doesn't become an eyesore with long grass and weeds.

If they were built further away from the houses, closer to the river, then they would have to be larger to accommodate that excess water.

They are off people's property it appears. Whiners.

The homes are in the NW part of town on Riverside BLVD.

I watched the video that went with the link and I think I like that Mayor. He tells it like it is. Just like Nenshi during the floods calling the rafters idiots. This guy doesn't ##### foot around saying what he thinks. He knows it won't be what he says that gets him reelected, because he knows if he does the right things he will get reelected.

Look at the map I posted and where the river is.

The big issue is snow build up on top of the berm and the side with the melt flowing into their basements. It wouldn't be an issue if the berm was further back.
