HF: Flames’ prospect Rafikov continuing development in Russian leagues in 2014-15

The defenseman also admitted a preference for playing a more offensive role from the back end.
“I prefer playing more like an offensive defenseman,” stated Rafikov. “I like helping my forward teammates, (and to) get on the attack myself. But of course, as a defenseman, the most important thing is not to allow goals to the opposition.”

That's what the scouting reports said about him in his draft year, but his offensive game has gained a few levels.
In the World Junior summer exhibition games against Canada he was a very effective puck mover and kept shooting pucks on goal.
20 pts in 47 games last season in the MHL.

He was one of the last cuts last year for the WJC wasn't he? If he is eligible he should almost be a shoe in to make the team.

I have a feeling he signs his ELC (rookie contract 2-way thing in case ELC is not the appropriate term for a Euro player) next year. Might be my favorite 7th round pick of em all.

Well, if he was Canadian, he would've likely been a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick. He might have top 4 upside, and he does seem to be progressing positively. I haven't watched him much though.

So apparently Rafikov is 2nd in Dmen scoring in the VHL (Russia's version of the AHL) and is getting top pairing minutes.
Averaging .71 pts/g

Which is why I hope Conroy hits him hard and fast with an ELC. I think he'd be better suited right now to complete his development in the AHL.
They really need to jump on this with the scarce D depth.
