I sincerely hope this thread avoids becoming about the politics of this event and the speeches coming/ that have happened.
I feel they would fit better in the politics thread.

Pointless post to CP really. In summary: I hate Harper and everything to do with the PCs and it could have been the best speech in history and I would still say it was horrible at all times...

Let's see what Mulcair says. If he jumps on the ISIS train, I'll give both him and the PM the benefit of the doubt, and assume they know something we don't (and that that something is enough to justify that link).
|
Well he didn't call ISIS by name, and neither did Harper for the event today, but they both did talk about how this attack was about fear:
Mulcair
"It was intended to make us more fearful of our neighbours but less confident in ourselves but it has failed."
For the most part I felt Mulcair echoed Harpers comments.

Great line by Mulcair to finish his speech:
'We will persevere…we woke up this morning in a country blessed with love, and peace...and we will again tomorrow...'

Geez, I wonder if you scripted this post before Harper came on the air.

They weren't able to stop this one, and I personally think these attempt will increase as long as we have our current foreign policies.

Harper's speech was what it was. A little tougher then Mulcair's but that's to be expected. The key take away is the discussion about strengthening legislature to improve security. Its also important to note that he linked the events of this week together and didn't retreat from calling them Terrorist acts.
I actually liked Mulcair's speech as well. I think he was calm, he claimed solidarity with the Prime Minister. He didn't want to use the term terrorist, which is interesting. His last line was very well scripted.
I didn't expect anything more then vague and brief remarks.
Will be interested to see what Trudeau does.
I do agree with an earlier post, Canada is now at war.

Terrorism is not isolated to Islam and the data is hardly irrelevant. We had politically motivated terrorism, religious, environment, etc. A blanket statement that terrorism is caused by Iraq involvement is hardly accurate.
Besides, have we not seen increased terrorism worldwide because of Al Qaeda even before Canadian involvement. Less politics and back on topic now.

One of my students brothers was in Ottawa today and posted a pic of the slain soldier on duty 10 mins before the attack. Unbelievable.

ISIS was making threats against this country before Canada signed up for the mission.
They were coming no matter what our foreign policy is.

And Harpers very public support of Israel plays no part in that?
