I really really hope the family and loved ones of the deceased soldier were informed before that tweet was released.
I dunno why but I am angered that news of his death should be announced in such a way. Just seems so disrespectful, impersonal and undignified.

I agree. It is counter productive when everyone ends up re-quoting the offensive posts.
Although it is really tempting. I already deleted 3 posts before hitting submit.

Sorry, but is it definative that the soldier is dead?

No official statement released to the media that I've seen. Word of mouth.

Surely his next of kin was supposed to be notified before anything else, and any tweets of condolences should be released only concurrently with a press conference announcing the death. I have no idea, but I assume that to be protocol... and the CTV report saying the Kenney tweet was unintentional supports that.

I know the feeling. Its much like Scottish Flame from yesterday.
Lets move this story forward, however deathly saddening.

We heard CNN say that a senior US official said that the Canadian government said that the attacker 'had no known ties to Islamic extremism'.
That leads a lot of potential for that statement to change, in part because it's at least third-hand information, and also because there's a lot that's unknown right now.

watching the CBC streaming at work, and to say Peter Mansbridge is doing a great job is understating things.

Thank you.
I hope they are delaying for reasons other than contacting next of kin.

Condolences to the soldier's family.
You prepare yourself for the worst when they are in combat or stationed in a location that has a high probability for combative action, but this is unfathomable. The solider was standing in front of a monument honouring those who have fought for everything that makes this country safe and free. That is not a place a solider should die or a family should expect to hear news like that about a loved one.

It does sound like based on who has tweeted/said he's died that it's probably true, but again, hasn't been released officially as far as I've seen anywhere. The networks reporting his death have all been referencing what's been said on twitter as sources.

Power outages could just be a coincidence. I heard there were grid problems in other parts of the province today too. My wife is working today at one of the power plants and even they lost power for a bit.
